I am pleased that the philosophical turns of our higher German culture are so familiar to you. — I too believe that “moral freedom” is the destiny of man and of humanity. Only, for me, this highest humane aspiration coincides with that recognition of God which Judaism has proclaimed from the beginning of history, whose development it has always promoted, and, since Spinoza, has made accessible to all historical peoples. — This recognition, which in the first and second history of revelation, when the spirit of historical humanity had not yet reached maturity, was attained through immediate sensory impressions and inner experiences that had not yet been analyzed or subjected to criticism; this recognition, which therefore previously appeared only as general wisdom and enlightenment, must today, on the foundation of that already acquired enlightenment and wisdom, be further developed into an exact science. While this science also draws its knowledge only from inner and outer experiences, it does so with critical consciousness.
Since you fetch weapons from the armory of speculative philosophy to combat my Jewish worldview, I am admittedly left with no other choice than to show you that philosophical speculation is not the last word in spiritual development — just as little as industrial speculation and the rule of capital is the final goal of material development. — Exact science—which recognizes only observation and experience, work and research, as the means to acquire spiritual and material property, but sees in speculation only bottomless fraud and unproven hypotheses—exact science is the higher authority to whose judgment I must appeal, in order to first show you why this science, which knows only iron laws of nature, with philosophy, which elevates the spirit above nature, and with the
