the spirit is absorbed into the body, the body into the spirit. — The greatest and most dangerous enemy of the Jewish religion in antiquity was the religion of the Semites' materialistic love, which had degenerated into raw sensuality: the cult of Baal; — in the Middle Ages, the religion of spiritualistic love: Christianity. — The Jewish people, who, thanks to their prophets of antiquity and rabbis of the Middle Ages, had kept themselves pure from these two degenerations of their religion, was and still is today the organ of the living Creator in the history of the world, the organ of unified and holy love. — To this organ, the organ of thought is related, but opposed. Both draw from the same infinite fount of life. But while the religious genius individualizes the Infinite, the philosophical and scientific thought strips the living of all its individual, subjective forms. — Objective philosophy and science have directly nothing to do with life, whereas religious teaching is identical with the national, social, moral-religious life, or it is nothing but hypocrisy.
However, I notice that I am departing entirely from my subject. I only wanted to make it comprehensible to you why I cannot align myself with those general humanitarian endeavors that abolish every distinction in the organism of humanity and, with a few misunderstood concepts of "freedom" and "progress," only build altars to arbitrariness and ignorance, upon which our easily enthused youth sacrifice their best energies.

74 der Geist in dem Körper, der Körper im Geiste auf. — Der größte und gefährlichste Feind der jüdischen Religion war im Alterthum die Religion der in rohe Sinnlichkeit entarteten, matenalistischen Liebe der Semiten: der Baalsdienst, — im Mittelalter die Religion der spintualistischen Liebe: das Chnstenthum. — Das jüdische Volk, welches ſich, Dank ſeinen Propheten des Alterthums und Rabbinen des Mittelalters, von dieſen beiden Entartungen ſeiner Religion rein erhalten hatte, war und ist heute noch das Organ des lebendigen Schöpfers in der Geschichte der Welt, das Organ der einheitlichen und heiligen Liebe. — Dieſem Organe ist das Denkorgan ver- wandt, aber entgegen geſetzt. Beide schöpfen aus demſelben unendlichen Lebensbom. Während aber das religiöſe Genie das Unendliche individualiſirt, entkleidet der philoſophische und wiſſen- schaftliche Gedanke das Lebendige aller ſeiner individuellen, ſub- jektiven Formen. — Die objektive Philoſophie und Wiſſenschaft hat direkt mit dem Leben nichts zu schaffen, während die reli- giöſe Lehre mit dem nationalen, ſozialen, ſittlich-religiöſen Leben identisch, oder nichts als Heuchelei ist. Doch ich merke, daß ich von meinem Thema ganz abkomme. Ich wollte Ihnen nur begreiflich machen, weshalb ich mich nicht mit jenen allgemeinen Humanitätsbestrebungen befreunden kann, die jeden Unterschied im Organismus der Menschheit aufheben und mit einigen mißverstandenen Begnffen von „Freiheit“ und „Fortschntt“ nur der Willkür und Unwiſſenheit Altäre bauen, auf welchen unſre leicht begeisterte Jugend ihre besten Kräfte opfert.
