between the different peoples of the earth. But in life, as in science, things have gone so far as to deny the creative, the typical, whereby on the one hand an idealistic mist, and on the other hand an atomistic dust was stirred up, which laid itself like mildew upon every seed and suffocated all life in the bud. It is only against these encroachments into the holy of holies of creative life that the national tendencies of our time react, and it is only against them that I appeal to the original folk-power in Judaism.
Humanity is, like the universal, cosmic life which only reaches its conclusion in it, and like the individual, microcosmic life in which all the blossoms and fruits of the spirit first come into being, a living organism, of which the original races and tribes are the organs and limbs. — In an organism, certain parts that were prominent during embryonic development can recede and disappear to the same degree as the organism advances toward its completion. Other organs, which previously had an inconspicuous, meager existence, only gain influence and significance after the organism has reached maturity.
To these latter, truly creative organs of humanity, the Jewish people also seem to belong. — Scarcely noticed in antiquity, where it was nearly crushed by the most powerful conquering peoples, twice near to annihilation in the Egyptian and Babylonian captivities, twice rising again to new, vigorous life and resisting the spiritually as well as politically most powerful peoples of antiquity, the Greeks and Romans, the longest, it fructified humanity with its spirit in the final struggles of the ancient world, which it alone survived as a nation, in order to rejuvenate itself simultaneously with their spiritual rebirth. — Today, after-

Aber im Leben, wie in der Wissenschaft, ist man so weit gegangen, das Schöpfensche, das Typische zu leugnen, wodurch einerseits ein idealistischer Dunk, andrerseits ein atomistischer Staub aufgeblasen wurde, der sich wie Mehlthau auf jedes Saatkom legte und alles Leben im Keime erstickte. Nur gegen diese Uebergnffe in das Allerheiligste des schöpfenschen Lebens reagiren die nationalen Tendenzen unsrer Zeit, und nur gegen sie appellire ich an die ursprüngliche Volkskraft im Judenthum. Die Menschheit ist, wie das universale, kosmische Leben, welches erst in ihr zum Abschluß gelangt, und wie das individuelle, mikrokosmische Leben, in welchem alle Blüten und Früchte des Geistes erst zum Dasein kommen, ein lebendiger Organismus, von dem die ursprünglichen Racen und Volksstämme die Organe und Glieder sind. — In einem Organismus können gewisse Theile, die während der embryonischen Entwicklung hervorragten, in dem Maße wieder zurück treten und schwinden, als der Organismus seiner Vollendung entgegen schreitet. Andre Organe, die früher ein unscheinbares, kümmerliches Dasein hatten, erlangen erst Einfluß und Bedeutung, nachdem der Organismus zur Reise gediehen ist. Zu diesen lestem, eigentlich schöpfenschen Organen der Menschheit scheint auch das jüdische Volk zu gehören. — Kaum bemerkt im Alterthum, wo es von den mächtigsten Eroberungsvölkem fast erdrückt worden, zwei Mal dem Untergange nahe in der ägyptischen und babylonischen Gefangenschaft, zwei Mal wieder zu neuem kräftigem Leben auferstehend und den geistig wie politisch mächtigsten Völkem des Alterthums, den Gnechen und Römem, am Längsten widerstehend, befruchtete es in den letzten Kämpfen der antiken Welt, die es allein als Nation überlebte, die Menschheit mit seinem Geiste, um gleichzeitig mit deren geistigen Wiedergeburt sich selbst zu verjüngen. — Heute, nach-
