...which I fully acknowledge, provided they are not hypocritical rhetorical flourishes, but bear real blossoms and bring forth fruit.
The anti-national humanitarian endeavors, however, are just as fruitless as the anti-humane national tendencies of the medieval reaction. In the anti-national, theoretical humanitarian endeavors I see, to put it mildly, more idealism than reality. We are made to inhale so much spiritualistic scent of love and humanistic chloroform that we become completely intoxicated by it, and insensitive to the pain that the still-existing antagonism of the great human family causes in real life. This antagonism is not eliminated by enlightened sermons. It requires a historical development according to laws that are as immutable as the laws of nature. Just as nature produces no general flowers and fruits, no general animals and plants, but only plant and animal types, so the Creator in history produces only types of peoples. In humanity, the plan of the plant and animal kingdom is indeed supposed to reach its conclusion. But humanity as an independent sphere of life, as the sphere of social life, is still in the process of developing. We find here a primordial diversity of types of peoples, which at first, as in the plant kingdom, merely existed alongside one another, then, according to the plan of the animal world, fought and absorbed each other, only to finally become free again, to live peacefully alongside one another and in solidarity with one another, without for that reason giving up their typical differences. —
The laws of world history, I mean those of the history of the world, of the developmental history of cosmic, organic, and social life, are still little understood. We do have specialized sciences, but as yet no universal science; we do not yet know the interconnectedness of all life. This much, however, is certain: that through a fusion of cultures, which in part have already
