You are in error, dear friend, if you believe that only our so-called Enlightened ones have familiarized themselves with the culture and science of the time, while among the pious Jews there still reigns that palpable Egyptian darkness, which is at least as detrimental to the rebirth of our nation as modern indifferentism. – Since I have dedicated myself to the cause of my people, I have come to know pious Jews, partly through personal contact, partly through their writings, from both the older and younger generations, especially the younger, who are in no way inferior to any of the Enlightened in scientific and literary education, but who at the same time know how to better appreciate the national past and future of our people than those enlightened minds who lack the philosophical spirit and historical sense.

Sie sind im Irrthum, liebe Freundin, wenn Sie glauben, nur unsre sogenannten Aufgeklärten hätten sich mit der Cultur und Wissenschaft der Zeit vertraut gemacht, unter den frommen Juden dagegen herrschte noch jene greifbare ägyptische Finstemiß, die der Wiedergeburt unsrer Nation mindestens eben so nachthei- lig sei, wie der modeme Indifferentismus. – Seitdem ich mich der Sache meines Volkes widme, habe ich, theils durch persönlichen Umgang, theils durch ihre Schnften, fromme Juden kennen gelemt, sowohl der ältem wie jüngem Generation, be- sonders der jüngem, welche keinem aufgeklärten an wissenschaft- licher und literanscher Bildung nachstehen, dabei aber die natio- nale Vergangenheit und Zukunft unsres Volkes besser zu würdi- gen wissen, als jene aufgeklärten Köpfe, welchen der philoso- phische Geist und der histonsche Sinn fehlt. Das orthodoxe Judenthum hat in England, Frankreich, Italien, Deutschland, Ungam, Polen und Böhmen so gut seine literansch-wissenschaftlichen Vertreter, wie das aufgeklärte.
