... and which ultimately lead to the most vacuous nihilism and unbridled anarchy, which only wreak havoc in all Jewish souls and alienate our younger generations more and more from Judaism.
By the way, one does the Reform an undeserved honor when one describes it as a free intellectual movement in the higher sense. In a negative respect, the rationalistic critique may well be described as a free movement, since the negation of the obsolete is the first step toward freedom. Positive freedom, however, is autonomous development, and the rationalistic Reform, which denies the essence of Judaism, its nationality, cannot be creative, and therefore cannot be free in the higher sense. What it has achieved for the negative critique of that which is moribund is, moreover, pitifully little. For most of this, in this regard, as you correctly remarked, we have the circumstances of a revolutionary time to thank, for which the straggling rationalists, who pompously call themselves Reformers, cannot be held responsible, in Judaism as in Christianity. — The modern society that emerged from the Revolution is a regenerated one, which shapes itself autonomously; it does not reform and patch up the old, but rather it creates the new. Every creation, however, is based on something; from nothing, nothing is created. — The national-humanitarian essence of the Jewish historical religion lies as the seed at the foundation of future social creations. As long as the Jews failed to recognize this essence of the modern era, which from the beginning was their own essence, they were involuntarily swept along by the current of modern history. This required no rationalistic reform, like those coun-
