be that shadow of the neo-Christian and neo-Jewish skeleton that haunts the minds of our religious reformers as a specter. Rather, every nation must have its own cult of history; every people must, like the Jewish people, become a people of God.
The Jewish religion, unlike the Christian one, is not threatened in its essence by the national and humanitarian aspirations of an era that leads back to the realistic Jewish essence. It is an error, still handed down to the modern world from Christianity, to believe that the entire worldview is encompassed in a fixed dogma. — I do not say, with Mendelssohn, that Judaism has no dogma, but I maintain that its doctrine of God was at no time finished and rigid, but rather that it always continued to develop on the typical basis of the divine unity of life with the spirit of the Jewish people and of humanity. The free development of one's knowledge of God through diligent study and conscientious research is the most sacred religious duty for a Jew.
This is the reason why Judaism has never excluded or condemned philosophical thought as heresy, why it especially never occurred to any true Jew to “reform” Judaism on the basis of a philosophical worldview. Hence, no actual formation of sects in Judaism. — Although in more recent and the most recent times there has been no lack of orthodox and heterodox dogmatic zealots in Judaism, no sects could arise, because the dogmatic basis of Judaism allows the widest scope for every free spiritual creation. There has never been a lack of differences of opinion on metaphysical subjects among the Jews. But Judaism knows only apostates, who exclude themselves from it.
