which always moved in the contrast between the crudest sensuality and the most exuberant mysticism, Christian dualism would not have developed to that sharpness which cuts through modern life. — Thus it is not the doctrine, but the race that shapes life. Nor is it the doctrine that has produced the biblical-patriarchal family life, the source of the Jewish cult, but rather the patriarchal life of the Jewish forefathers is the creative basis of the biblical religion, which was never anything other than a national cult of history, developing from family traditions.
Before the appearance of the Germanic races on the world-stage, there were generally only two kinds of cults: a nature cult and a history cult. The former had found its classical expression in Greece, the latter in Judea. As the Greek cult brought perfected nature to representation, so Judaism revealed the law of God in history. With the advent of the Germanic races, the nature and history cults ceased. In their place came the apotheosis of the isolated individual. Christianity found in the Nordic races as a natural disposition what in itself was only a consequence of the downfall of the ancient nationalities, a manifestation of their death: I mean that view of life which sees neither in nature nor in history a unifying bond, a divine life, but everywhere only isolated existences. *)
As long as the Germanic races ruled in Europe, no national life could come to develop. The "religion of love," separated from the life of nature and history, had only individual salvation in its sights. The apotheosis of the individual finally degenerated into an exuberant...

Auch ist es nicht die Lehre, welche das biblisch-patnarchalische Familienleben, die Quelle des jüdischen Cultus, erzeugt hat, ſondem das patnarchalische Leben der jüdischen Stammväter ist vielmehr der schöpfensche Grund der Bibelreligion, welche nie etwas Anderes war, als ein aus Familientraditionen ſich fortbildender nationaler Geschichtscultus. Vor dem Erscheinen der germanischen Racen auf dem Schauplatz des Welttheaters gab es überhaupt nur zweierlei Cultusarten: einen Natur- und einen Geschichtscultus. Jener hatte in Gnechenland, dieſer in Judäa ſeinen daſſischen Ausdruck gefunden. Wie der gnechische Cultus die vollendete Natur zur Darstellung brachte, ſo offenbarte das Judenthum das Geſetz Gottes in der Geschichte. Mit dem Auftreten der germanischen Racen hörte der Natur- und Geschichtscultus auf. An ſeine Stelle trat die Apotheoſe des iſolirten Individuums. Das Chnstenthum fand in den nordischen Racen als Naturanlage vor, was bei ihm ſelbst nur eine Folge des Unterganges der antiken Nationalitäten, eine Manifestation ihres Todes war: ich meine jene Lebensanschauung, die weder in der Natur, noch in der Geschichte ein einheitliches Band, ein göttliches Leben, ſondem überall nur iſolirte Existenzen erblickt. *) So lange die germanischen Racen in Europa herrschten, konnte kein nationales Leben zur Entwickelung kommen.
