...and which will bear fruit as soon as the rigid shell in which it was enclosed is broken through, as soon as it is planted into the cultivated soil of the present, where light and air, and the dew of heaven may vivifyingly join it!
The rigid forms of orthodox Judaism, which were fully justified until the century of rebirth, will be burst apart naturally only from within, through the germinative power of the living idea of Jewish nationality and its cultus of history. Only from the national rebirth will the religious genius of the Jews, like the giant who touches Mother Earth, draw new strength and be animated anew by the holy spirit of the Prophets. —
Until now it has not been granted to any friend of culture, not even to the master hand of a Mendelssohn, to break through from the outside that hard shell with which Rabbinism had armored Judaism, in order to let light penetrate into it, without destroying its innermost essence, its national cultus of history, and murdering a holy life.

<center>30</center> loren hat, und welches Früchte tragen wird, ſobald die starre Hülle, in der es eingeschloſſen war, durchbrochen, ſobald es in den cultivirten Boden der Gegenwart hinein gepflanzt ist, wo Licht und Luft, und der Thau des Himmels belebend hinzu treten! Die starren Formen des orthodoren Judenthums, die bis zum Jahrhundert der Wiedergeburt vollkommen berechtigt waren, werden nur von Innen heraus, durch die Keimkraft der lebendigen Idee der jüdischen Nationalität und ihres Geschichtscultus, naturgemäß gesprengt. Nur aus der nationalen Wiedergeburt wird das religiöſe Genie der Juden, gleich dem Rieſen, der die Muttererde berührt, neue Kräfte ziehen und vom heiligen Geiste der Propheten wieder beſeelt werden. — Es ist bis jetzt noch keinem Cultusfreund, ſelbst nicht der Meisterhand eines Mendelsſohn gegeben geweſen, jene harte Schaale, mit welcher der Rabbinismus das Judenthum umpanzert hatte, von Außen zu durchbrechen, um Licht in daſſelbe eindnngen zu laſſen, ohne ſein innerstes Weſen, ſeinen nationalen Geschichtscultus, zu zerstören und ein heiliges Leben zu morden.
