The history of the last three centuries provides plenty of examples for this on every one of its pages, up to the present day; I will content myself with drawing your attention to the current events in Italy. Upon the ruins of Christian Rome, the reborn Italian people are rising. — Just as Christianity, so too has Islamism taught only resignation; and as Austria relates to Italy, so does Turkey relate to Palestine. — Christianity and Islamism are the inscriptions on the tombstones that barbaric pressure has rolled onto the graves of the nations. — As long as the Austrians ruled in Italy, and the Turks in the holy land of our fathers, the Italian and Jewish people could not reawaken to life. The soldiers of modern civilization, however, the French, are breaking the rule of the barbarians, rolling away the tombstones from the graves of the slumbering with their Herculean arms, and the peoples are reawakening.
In those lands that separate the Occident from the Orient, in Russia, Poland, Prussia, Austria, and Turkey, live millions of our kinsmen, who day and night let the most fervent prayers for the restoration of the Jewish kingdom ascend to the God of our fathers. They have preserved the living core of Judaism, I mean the Jewish nationality, more faithfully than our occidental brothers, who would like to revive everything in the faith of our fathers, except for the very hope that created this faith and has kept it alive through all the storms of time, the hope for the restoration of our nationality. — To those millions of faithful brothers I would like to wander and call out to them: Carry your banner high, my people! In you is preserved the living grain which, like the seeds in the Egyptian mummies, has slumbered for millennia, but has not lost its germinating power—

Die Geschichte der letzten drei Jahrhunderte liefert dafür auf jeder ihrer Seiten bis zum heutigen Tage Beispiele in Menge; ich begnüge mich damit, Sie auf die heutigen Vorgänge in Italien aufmerkſam zu machen. Auf den Trümmem des chnstlichen Roms erhebt ſich das wiedergeborene italienische Volk. — Wie das Chnstenthum, ſo hat auch der Islamismus nur die Reſignation gelehrt; und wie Oestreich zu Italien, ſo verhält ſich die Türkei zu Palästina. — Das Chnstenthum und der Islamismus ſind die Inschnften auf den Grabsteinen, welche barbanscher Druck auf die Gräber der Nationen gewälzt hat. — So lange die Oestreicher in Italien, die Türken im heiligen Lande unſrer Väter herrschten, konnten das italienische und jüdische Volk nicht wieder zum Leben erwachen. Die Soldaten der modemen Civiliſation aber, die Franzoſen, brechen die Herrschaft der Barbaren, wälzen mit ihren Herkulesarmen die Grabsteine von den Gräbem der Entschlummerten hinweg, und die Völker erwachen wieder. In jenen Ländem, welche den Occident vom Onent scheiden, in Rußland, Polen, Preußen, Oestreich und der Türkei, leben Millionen unſrer Stammesgenoſſen, die Tag und Nacht die inbrünstigsten Gebete für die Wiederherstellung des jüdischen Reiches zum Gottte der Väter emporsteigen laſſen. Sie haben den lebendigen Kem des Judenthums, ich meine die jüdische Nationalität, treuer bewahrt, als unſre occidentalen Brüder, die Alles im Glauben unſrer Väter neu beleben möchten, nur nicht die Hoffnung, die dieſen Glauben geschaffen, und durch alle Stürme der Zeiten hindurch lebendig erhalten hat, die Hoffnung auf die Wiederherstellung unſrer Nationalität. — Zu jenen Millionen treuer Brüder möchte ich hinwandem und ihnen zurufen: Trage Dein Banner hoch, mein Volk!
