So, my friend, I thought in the midst of my endeavors on behalf of the European proletariat. My messianic belief was then, as it is today, the belief in the rebirth of the world-historical cultural peoples through the elevation of the fallen to the level of the more advanced. Today, as at the time when I published my first writings, I still believe that Christianity was a great step on the path toward that sublime goal which the prophets had depicted as the messianic age. Today, as then, I also still believe that this great world-historical epoch began to dawn in the spirit of humanity with Spinoza. But I have never believed and nowhere said that Christianity was the final word in the sacred history of humanity, or that this history concluded with Spinoza. — It is certain, and I have never doubted it, that today we yearn for a far more comprehensive redemption than Christianity has ever offered, or ever could offer. — Christianity was the nocturnal star which, after the sunset of ancient life, rose for the peoples as a comfort and a hope; it shone over the graves of the murdered ancient nations.
