...terial creations are capable and called upon: Germany, France, and England. — Germany has paved the way of philosophy; the broad path of political-social transformation, which goes hand in hand with the measured progress of the exact sciences, this path the French have opened far and wide to all peoples of the earth since their great Revolution. The English, like the Germans, go their own way, which, though slow, leads all the more surely to the goal: just as the progress of intellectual work originates from Germany, so that of industrial work originates from England.
The Jews have long felt that the struggle of the peoples who strive and fight with France for their national rebirth is their own struggle, and they have everywhere voluntarily joined the political-social movements with enthusiasm and a spirit of sacrifice. — It is time, a French democrat calls to them, that you also think of yourselves, and begin to work on your own rebirth. *)
One thing, by the way, does not exclude the other. When I work for the rebirth of my own people, I have not for that reason given up my humanitarian aspirations. Today's national movement is only a new start on the path that the French Revolution has taken since its beginning. The French people have called all peoples to their aid since the beginning of their great Revolution in the last century. But the peoples were mostly deaf to this cry of distress from afar; they only listened to the noise of reaction in their own midst. — Today this noise at most still deafens, in some parts of Germany, the people who have been swindled into a kind of wild enthusiasm for their "warlords." 10 tenellen Schöpfungen befähigt und berufen sind: Deutschland, Frankreich und England. — Den Weg der Philosophie hat Deutschland geebnet; den breitem Weg der politisch-socialen Umgestaltung, die mit dem gemessenen Fortschntte der exakten Wissenschaft Hand in Hand geht, diesen Weg haben die Franzosen seit ihrer großen Revolution allen Völkem der Erde weit und breit eröffnet. Die Engländer gehen, wie die Deutschen, ihren eignen Weg, der zwar langsam, aber desto sicherer zum Ziele führt: wie der Fortschntt der intellektuellen Arbeit von Deutschland ausgeht, so jener der industnellen von England. Die Juden fühlten schon längst, daß der Kampf der Völker, welche mit Frankreich für ihre nationale Wiedergeburt nngen und kämpfen, ihr eigener Kampf sei, und sie haben sich überall den politisch-socialen Bewegungen mit Begeisterung und Opfermuth freiwillig angeschlossen. — Es ist Zeit, ruft ihnen ein französischer Demokrat zu, daß Ihr auch an Euch selbst denkt, und an Eurer eigenen Wiedergeburt zu arbeiten beginnt. *) Eins schließt übngens das Andere nicht aus. Wenn ich für die Wiedergeburt meines eignen Volkes arbeite, so habe ich darum meine humanitären Bestrebungen nicht aufgegeben. Die heutige nationale Bewegung ist nur ein neuer Anlauf auf dem Wege, den die französische Revolution seit ihrem Beginne eingeschlagen hat. Das französische Volk hat seit dem Anfange seiner großen Revolution im vongen Jahrhundert alle Völker zu Hülfe gerufen. Aber die Völker waren meist taub für diesen Nothschrei aus der Feme; sie hörten nur auf den Lärm der Reaktion in ihrer eignen Mitte. — Heute betäubt dieser Lärm höchstens noch in einigen Theilen Deutschlands das in eine Art wilder Begeisterung für seine „Knegsherren“ hineingeschwindelte Volk. Alle anderen Völker vemehmen und verstehen den Ruf Frankreichs. Auch an unser antikes Volk ist dieser Ruf ergangen, und ich will meine Stimme mit der französischen vereinigen,
