have acquired.” — Lastly, the Dean of Melbourne mounted the podium and declared that for years he had always repeated to his countrymen that it would not be much longer before the Jews would again take possession of the land that belongs to them and is assured to them. His joy was therefore great to experience the first step being taken to help the Jews to their rights, and however small the beginning might be, he had the firm conviction that it would lead to the goal. Just as the first and second redemptions of the Jews from exile, so too must the third be accomplished through the application of natural means with the assistance of the Almighty, and it was a sacred duty of Christians to support the Jews in their work.
Thereupon it was decided to form a committee and to collect contributions throughout Australia in order to acquire real estate in the Holy Land for the Jews.
Even before this news was published and could be known in East Prussia, R. Hirsch Kalischer published the third part of his work דרישת ציון, which was already discussed in the twelfth letter. — The opinions of three Jewish authorities, which are printed before the treatise, support the views of R. Kalischer, who, in remarkable agreement with the Dean of Melbourne, expresses that the return from the third exile must at first be accomplished quite gradually, under the protection of the European powers and with the help of our influential brethren, who have not for nothing attained such great wealth and high state offices in these times. 237 erworben haben.“ — Zuletzt bestiegt der Dean of Melboume die Rednerbühne und erklärte, ſeit Jahren schon habe er stets ſeinen Landsleuten wiederholt, daß es nicht lange mehr dauem werde, und die Juden würden wieder Beſitz ergreifen von dem Lande, welches ihnen gehöre und zugeſichert ſei. Seine Freude ſei daher groß, es zu erleben, daß der erste Schntt geschehe, den Juden zu ihrem Rechte zu verhelfen, und wie klein auch der Anfang ſei, ſo habe er doch die feste Ueberzeugung, daß er zum Ziele führe. Wie die erste und zweite Erlöſung der Juden aus dem Exile, ſo müſſe auch die dntte durch Anwendung natürlicher Mittel unter dem Bestande des Allmächtigen bewerkstelligt werden, und es ſei eine heilige Pflicht der Chnsten, die Juden in ihrem Werke zu unterstützen. Darauf wurde beschloſſen, ein Comitee zu bilden, und in ganz Australien Beiträge zu ſammeln, um im heiligen Lande für die Juden Grundeigenthum zu erwerben. Bevor noch dieſe Nachncht in Ostpreußen veröffentlicht wurde und bekannt ſein konnte, gab R. Hirsch Kalischer den dntten Theil ſeines Werkes אמונה heraus, von welchem bereits im zwölften Bnefe die Rede war. — Die Gutachten dreier jüdischen Autontäten, welche der Abhandlung vorgedruckt ſind, unterstützen die Anſichten des R. Kalischer, der ſich in merkwürdiger Uebereinstimmung mit dem Dean of Melboume dahin ausspncht, daß die Rückkehr aus dem dntten Exil zunächst ganz allmälig bewerkstelligt werden, müſſe unter dem Schuße der europäischen Mächte und mit Hülfe unſrer einflußreichen Brüder, die nicht umſonst in dieſer Zeit zu ſo großen Reichthümem und hohen Staatsämtem gelangt ſeien.
