To give up what has barely been acquired is not in human nature and is not to be expected even from the patriotic Jews, let alone from the majority of our "educated" parvenus, who have succeeded in breaking every connection with their old Jewish family and unhappy tribal community, and who are proud to turn their backs on the misery of the "people". This, however, will not prevent the noble among them from again paying attention to this people, whom they really no longer know, and supporting it in its world-historical mission, when it has the courage to reclaim its fatherland not only from God, as it has dared to do until now, but also from men.
At all times, the Jews dispersed throughout the world have felt and acted upon their solidarity with the Jewish centers. No people feels, as do the Jews, every impulse in the spiritual nerve center of the nation out to the furthest peripheries of the people's organism. The dispersal to the ends of the world, even in antiquity, did not prevent this remarkable people from participating in every national undertaking, from standing by each other in good fortune and in bad, from bearing good as well as evil fate together, and from not heartlessly abandoning the last of its children. Today, when distances no longer exist, it is a matter of complete indifference for a Jewish state whether and how many members of the Jewish people have their residences at home or abroad. Even in the times of the ancient Jewish kingdom, many Jews always lived abroad. The words that our Jew-haters of today still repeat could already be put into the mouth of the Jew-hater Haman at the time of the Second Temple: "There is a people, scattered among the other peoples." – Besides, there is no civilized nation of which many members do not live outside their country among other nations, be it as foreigners, or
