cosmic, pre-exists only where, as on our cosmic and organic stage, the development of these two spheres of life is closed and only a cycle still takes place; but that the organic originally arises from the inorganic, the material from the immaterial, wherever cosmic and organic spheres of life begin to develop.
After the pre-existence of germs had proven to be an untenable hypothesis, and one could no longer directly defend it, the attempt was made to maintain it indirectly. The anti-genetic worldview has therefore struggled with all its might against the phenomenon of parentless spontaneous generation, the generatio spontanea, the so-called "Heterogeny," and has sought to deny it, despite obvious evidence. — From this position, too, it was displaced.
Whoever has followed the new experiments of the physiologist Pouchet and his friends, which were communicated to the Paris Academy of Sciences, could be convinced that heterogeny can no longer be denied in the face of the facts that were established. Pouchet and his friends have established that the first organic germs arise from inorganic matter, and that with their death, that very organic matter emerges which becomes the birthplace for more complicated organisms. — In a similar way, in fact, even today, according to Dupetit-Thouars, on islands in the South Sea that have only just risen from the ocean, entire series of organisms arise, whose germs, according to the learned French admiral, could have been transported there neither by the air nor by the water.

217 kosmischen, nur da präexistirt, wo, wie auf unserm kosmischen und organischen Schauplatz, die Entwicklung dieser beiden Lebenssphären geschlossen ist und nur noch ein Kreislauf stattfindet; daß aber das Organische aus dem Anorganischen, das Matenelle aus dem Immatenellen ursprünglich entsteht überall wo kosmische und organische Lebenssphären sich zu entwickeln beginnen. Nachdem die Präexistenz der Keime sich als eine unhaltbare Hypothese erwiesen hatte, und man sie direkt nicht mehr in Schuß nehmen konnte, hat man versucht, sie indirekt aufrecht zu halten. Die antigenetische Weltanschauung hat sich darum mit aller Macht gegen das Phänomen der eltemlosen Urzeugung, der generatio spontanea, der sogenannten „Heterogenie“, gesträubt und dieselbe, trotz augenscheinlicher Beweise, zu leugnen gesucht. — Auch aus dieser Position wurde sie verdrängt. Wer den neuem Expenmenten des Physiologen Pouchet und seiner Freunde gefolgt ist, welche der Panser Akademie der Wissenschaften mitgetheilt wurden, konnte sich davon überzeugen, daß die Heterogenie den Thatsachen gegenüber, welche constatirt wurden, nicht mehr geleugnet werden kann. Pouchet und seine Freunde haben es constatirt, daß aus der anorganischen Matene die ersten organischen Keime entstehen, und daß mit deren Absterben eben jene organische Matene zu Tage tntt, welche die Geburtsstätte für complicirtere Organismen wird. — In ähnlicher Weise entstehen in der That noch heute, nach Dupetit-Thouars, auf Inseln der Südsee, die sich eben erst aus dem Meere empor gehoben haben, ganze Organismenreihen, deren Keime, nach dem gelehrten französischen Admiral, weder durch die Luft, noch durch das Wasser dorthin transportirt worden sein konnten.
