Note V.
At the time when Mendelssohn lived in Germany, R. Israel Bal Shem appeared in Poland. He, just as little as Mendelssohn, had the pretension of being the founder of a sect. Just as, despite this, the Reformists in Germany were brought into being by Mendelssohn, so the Hasidim of the Slavic lands were brought into being by R. Israel Bal Shem.
— A Hasid is, according to the literal meaning of the word, a very pious Jew, without the connotation that the word "Pietist" has in Protestant Christianity. There have always been Hasidim in Judaism, just as for a long time before R. Israel there were so-called Bale Shem, i.e., Jews who occupied themselves with kabbalistic thaumaturgy, with the practical Kabbalah, and found very many believers.
— For had not the Jews also participated just as much in the culture of the peoples among whom they lived, particularly in Spain, as the German Jews since Mendelssohn in German culture, without, however, like the latter, becoming Reformists.
— If since Mendelssohn, rationalism among the German Jews, and since R. Israel, Hasidism among the Slavic Jews, caused serious schisms, this was due to the peculiar circumstances of an era which, even in those countries where it has come to the consciousness of the people even less, as for example in the Slavic lands, is nevertheless distinguished from all earlier times toto genere.
