Is it by chance that with every new direction that draws me into its magic circle, an unfortunate female being appears on my life's path and gives me the courage and strength to wander unknown paths?
Oh, how mistaken are those who underestimate the influence of women on the development of Judaism and the Jews! — For is it not said of the latter: They owed their first redemption to the moral purity of their women, and they will also have them to thank for their final redemption. *)
Only when I saw You in Your sorrow did my breast open, and the coffin lid lifted easily from my slumbering national thought, as I discovered the source from which Your faith in the eternity of the spirit has sprung.
What brought about the resolution in me to journey and to stand up for the national rebirth of my people is Your infinite spiritual anguish over the loss of a dearly departed one.
Only a Jewish heart is capable of such love, a love so unlimited, which like a mother's love stems from the blood, and yet is as pure as the Spirit of God. And this love is the natural wellspring of that intellectual love of God which, according to Spinoza, is the highest state the spirit can possibly attain. From the inexhaustible source of Jewish family love stem the redeemers of the human race.
"Through you," says the divine genius of the Jewish family in its self-revelation, "all the families of the earth will be blessed."
Every Jewish man has the substance of a Messiah, every Jewish woman has that of a mater dolorosa within her.

2 Ist es Zufall, daß mit jeder neuen Richtung, die mich in ihren Zauberfreis zieht, ein unglückliches Weſen auf meinem Lebenswege erscheint und mir den Muth und die Kraft giebt, unbekannte Bahnen zu durchwandem? O, wie falsch find Diejenigen benchtet, welche den Einfluß der Frauen auf die Entwicklung des Judenthums und der Juden genng anschlagen! — Heißt es doch von den Letzteren: Der Sittenreinheit ihrer Frauen hatten fie ihre erste Erlösung zu verdanken, und werden fie auch ihre letzte Erlösung zu verdanken haben. *) Erst da ich Sie in Ihrem Schmerze ſah, öffnete ſich meine Brust, und leicht hob ſich der Sargdeckel von meinem entschlummerten Volksgedanken, als ich die Quelle entdeckte, aus welcher Ihr Glaube an die Ewigkeit des Geistes entsprungen. Was in mir den Entschluß zur Reiſe brachte, für die nationale Wiedergeburt meines Volkes aufzutreten, ist Ihr unendlicher Seelenschmerz über den Verlust einer theuren Hinschiedenen. Solcher Liebe, die gleich der Mutterliebe aus dem Blute stammt, und doch ſo rein wie der Geist Gottes ist, einer ſo unbegrenzten Familienliebe ist nur ein jüdisches Herz fähig. Und dieſe Liebe ist der natürliche Bom jener intellektualen Liebe Gottes, welche nach Spinoza das Höchste ist, wozu es der Geist überhaupt bnngen kann. Aus der unverſiegbaren Quelle der jüdischen Familienliebe stammen die Erlöſer des Menschengeschlechts. „Durch Dich“ ſagt in ſeiner Selbstoffenbarung der göttliche Genius der jüdischen Familie, „werden alle Familien der Erde geſegnet.“ Jeder Jude hat den Stoff zu einem Meſſias, jede Jüdin hat den zu einer mater dolorosa in ſich. *) Vergl.
