Had the uprising of the German peasants against rotten feudal conditions not been so shamefully abandoned and betrayed by the coryphaei of German culture and civilization, the German people would have already then taken their regular course of development in modern life, and not only kept pace with the other civilized German peoples, but would have remained at their head, as was its due as the firstborn of the new age. The power of the in the Middle Ages so mighty “German sword” would have transformed itself into the nobler and higher power of the modern German spirit and diligence — and the same people that overthrew the ancient world domination of Rome in order to take up its inheritance as a medieval feudal power, would have been the first to give the world the signal for the overthrow of its own, for the overthrow of the last racial domination. — Fate willed it otherwise. The last chosen people, like the first, had to atone for its privilege to such a preeminent historical role first through deep disgrace, before it could be worthy of entering the modern league of humanity, which is founded on the equal rights of all world-historical peoples.

187 „Wäre die Erhebung der deutschen Bauem gegen verrottete feudale Zustände nicht so schmählich von den Coryphäen der deutschen Cultur und Civilisation verlaſſen und verrathen worden, ſo hätte das deutsche Volk schon damals ſeinen regelmäßigen Entwicklungsgang im modemen Leben genommen, und nicht nur gleichen Schntt mit den übngen deutschen Culturvölkem gehalten, ſondem es wäre, wie es ihm als dem Erstgebomen der neuen Zeit zugestanden, an deren Spitze geblieben. Die Macht des im Mittelalter ſo gewaltigen „deutschen SchwerdtS“ hätte ſich in die edlere und höhere Macht des modemen deutschen Geistes und Fleißes umgestaltet — und daſſelbe Volk, welches die antike Weltherrschaft Roms stürzte, um deren Erbschaft als mittelalterliche Feudalmacht anzutreten, hätte zuerst der Welt das Signal zum Sturze ſeiner eigenen, zum Sturze der letzten Racenherrschaft gegeben. — Das Schickſal wollte es anders. Das letzte außerwählte Volk mußte, wie das erste, ſein Pnvilegium zu einer ſo hervorragenden geschichtlichen Rolle erst durch tiefe Schmach abbüßen, bevor es würdig ſein konnte, in den modemen Menschheitsbund einzutreten, der auf die Gleichberechtigung aller welthistonschen Völker gegründet ist. Die äußem oder einzelnen Urſachen, durch welche die deutsche Revolution scheiterte, ſind bekannt. — Karl V., der den Traum eines univerſalen deutschrömischen Reichs zu einer Zeit verwirklichen wollte, als das nationale Bewußtſein in den welthistonschen Völkem 13*
