...ductive forces, which have created the material, in their fragmentation. — If the industrial and intellectual workers, these productive forces of the social world, remain in their fragmentation — if they do not unite, centralize, and organize their scattered forces — if they do not in this way become speculative themselves; then the opposition between labor and speculation (Materialism and Idealism) necessarily remains stationary.
The last theoretical contradiction, which admittedly still must be overcome, the opposition between philosophy and the empirical sciences, between Idealism and Materialism, is nothing other than the theoretical expression of the last practical contradiction in social life. — Just as initially the master related to the slave and the priest to the uninitiated, later the feudal lord to the serf and the cleric to the layman, so finally the capitalist relates to the worker, the philosopher to the researcher, namely as the organizing to the unorganized, the unifying to the scattered, the strong to the weak, the living to the dead. — The people have always come up short in this antagonism; they always represented death. — Therefore Moses already said to our people: But you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
