peculiarity of their genius, their organization, their race; and although these revelations are immediate inspirations of the Creator, they are yet no more miraculous than those of the Greek genius, who had a special calling for creations of art, just as the Jewish had for creations of the cognition of God.
Moses, the Prophets, and the Hagiographers stand in no more contradiction to modern philosophy and science than do Homer, Aeschylus, Pindar, and Sophocles. We read our modern knowledge, which did not yet exist at the time of the Bible, into the holy scriptures when we want to judge or even just justify them from the current standpoint of science.
The doctrine of Spinoza, the product of the Jewish genius and of modern science, is not in contradiction with the Jewish doctrine of unity, but at most with the rationalistic and supernaturalistic conception of it. What Jewish revelation has stressed since Moses is not transcendence in opposition to immanence, but unity in opposition to the multiplicity of the creative Being. — This had already been expressed long before the fall of the Second Temple by the Jewish philosopher Philo; later, in the Middle Ages, by the great Jewish religious philosophers of the Spanish cultural epoch; and finally, in the modern era, re-articulated by Spinoza with all the sharpness and depth of his ingenious spirit. — It is
