always presupposes the lower. — Thus, in contrast to the higher stage of life of the Organic, the Cosmic appears as the subordinate and lifeless, especially at the boundary that leads from the life of celestial bodies to that of organisms. Here, on the already solidified surface of a celestial body, of which we observe only individual and isolated parts, we see, as it were, only the dead remnants of the cosmic sphere of life, from which the new, higher, organic sphere of life develops. If, on the other hand, we observe the life of celestial bodies where it itself arises and develops, in cosmic space, then we cannot deny it the characteristics of divine life, which is aptly expressed in our literature with the words: סוף מעשה במחשבה תחלה, the last in deed is the first in thought. The remarkable phenomena that have been observed on comets in more recent times, as already in the seventeenth century; the division of Biela's Comet; the changes observed on this and other double comets, e.g., on the one of Liais at Pernambuco; the agglomeration of cosmic nebulae, their spiral-shaped windings and final grouping into sidereal and planetary systems; these and many similar phenomena that the telescope shows us are life processes, which can be explained as little by an externally and one-sidedly conceived mechanical theory of gravitation as the division process of an embryo, or the ge-

126 niedngem stets zur Vorausſetzung. — So erscheint, der höhem Lebensstufe des Organischen gegenüber, das Koſmische als das Untergeordnete und Lebloſe, beſonders an der Grenzscheide, welche vom Leben der Weltkörper zu jenem der Organisınen hinüberführt. Hier, auf der bereits erstarrten Oberfläche eines Weltkörpers, von welchem wir nur einzelne und vereinzelte Theile beobachten, ſehen wir gleichſam nur die todten Reste der koſmischen Lebenssphäre, aus welchen ſich die neue, höhere, organische Lebenssphäre entwickelt. Beobachten wir dagegen das Leben der Weltkörper da wo es ſelbst entsteht und ſich entwickelt, im Weltraume, ſo können wir ihm nicht die Merkmale des göttlichen Lebens absprechen, welches in unſrer Literatur treffend mit den Worten ausgedrückt wird: תהלה סוף מעשה במחשבה תחלה, das Letzte im Werke ist das Erste im Gedanken. Die merkwürdigen Erscheinungen, welche man in neuerer Zeit, wie schon im ſiebenzehnten Jahrhundert, an Kometen beobachtet hat; die Theilung des Biela’schen; die an dieſem und andem Doppel-Kometen, z. B. an dem von Liais, zu Pemambuco wahrgenommenen Veränderungen; das Zuſammenballen koſmischer Nebel, ihre spiralförmigen Windungen und schließliche Gruppirung zu Sideral- und Planetensystemen; dieſe und viele ähnliche Phänomene, die uns das Teleskop zeigt, ſind Lebensprozeſſe, welche ſo wenig durch eine äußerlich und einſeitig aufgefaßte mechanische Gravitationstheone erklärt werden können, wie der Theilungsprozeß eines Embryos, oder die ge-
