Civilized nations unite in the wish to help our people regain their national inheritance; and what is most remarkable about this is that they all agree, almost word for word, on the means they propose for this purpose. — If I still needed confirmation of the convictions that have matured in me as a result of long years of study and life experience, I would find it today in the concurring opinion of so many people and nations who, without knowing each other and proceeding from the most varied points of view, arrive at the same results. Already I see the society, which a pious Jewish patriot has scarcely proposed, coming to life, and the cultivation of the holy land being undertaken by Jewish workers under the protection of the Western civilized nations. Once prosperity has been raised under the protection of the law and on the foundation of labor, then Jewish universities will arise in the land of our fathers, just as in Germany and the other European countries, under the direction of capable scholars, whose intellectual development need no longer come into conflict with the ancient Jewish national cult. —
The faithful guardians of the holy sepulcher of our nationality, despite their poverty, want to hear nothing of subsidies and undertakings through which the ancient Jewish cult would be endangered; and our most occidental philanthropists therefore do not cease to complain that "nothing can be done with these people." — Indeed, your lack of planning and your misguided plans lead to nothing; they can only sow mischief and discord everywhere. But do not accuse those who would rather die in misery on the consecrated ground than become apostates to their ancient cult; accuse your own unfamiliarity with the needs of Judaism and of the times, if you are able to achieve as little a happy result in the Orient as in the Occident. —

120 Culturvölker vereinigen sich in dem Wunsche, unserm Volke wieder zu seinem nationalen Erbtheile zu verhelfen; und was das Merkwürdigste dabei ist, sie alle stimmen auch fast wörtlich in den Mitteln überein, die sie zu diesem Zwecke in Vorschlag bnngen. — Bedürfte es für mich noch einer Bestätigung der in Folge langjähnger Studien und Lebenserfahrungen in mir gereiften Ueberzeugungen, ich würde sie heute in der übereinstimmenden Meinung so vieler Menschen und Völker finden, die, ohne sich gegenseitig zu kennen, und von den verschiedensten Gesichtspunkten ausgehend, zu denselben Resultaten gelangen. Schon sehe ich die Gesellschaft, welche ein frommer jüdischer Patnot kaum in Vorschlag gebracht hat, ins Leben treten, und den Anbau des heiligen Landes durch jüdische Arbeiter in Angnff nehmen unter dem Schutze der westlichen Culturvölker. Hat sich einmal der Wohlstand unter dem Schutze des Gesetzes und auf der Grundlage der Arbeit gehoben, so werden im Lande der Väter so gut, wie in Deutschland und den übngen europäischen Ländem, jüdische Hochschulen unter der Leitung tüchtiger Gelehrten entstehen, deren Geistesbildung nicht mehr mit dem altjüdischen Nationalcultus in Conflict zu gerathen braucht. — Die treuen Hüter des heiligen Grabes unsrer Nationalität wollen troß ihrer Armuth nichts von Unterstützungen und Untemehmungen hören, durch welche der altjüdische Cultus gefährdet wird; und unsre occidentalsten Philanthropen hören daher nicht auf zu klagen, daß „mit diesen Menschen nichts anzufangen sei.“ — Allerdings, Eure Planlosigkeit und Eure verkehrten Pläne führen zu Nichts; sie können überall nur Unheil und Zwietracht stiften. Aber klagt nicht diejenigen an, die lieber im Elende auf der geweihten Erde sterben, als ihrem uralten Cultus abtrünnig werden wollen; klagt Eure Unbekanntschaft mit den Bedürfnissen des Judenthums und der Zeit an, wenn Ihr im Onent so wenig, als im Occident, ein glückliches Resultat erzielen könnt.—
