The rigid orthodox ice crust will soon be melted when the spark of Jewish patriotism, which glows beneath it, is fanned into a central fire, under whose influence spring will dawn, and our nation will celebrate its resurrection.
— In contrast, occidental Jewry is still in many ways surrounded by a far more insoluble crust, by the dead remnants of the first stirrings of the modern spirit, by the inorganic limestone shell of a defunct rationalist Enlightenment, which is not melted by the fire of Jewish patriotism, which can only be broken by a pressure coming from without, under whose force everything that has no future must give up the ghost.

121 Die starre orthodoxe EisKruste wird bald geschmolzen ſein, wenn der Funke des jüdischen Patnotismus, der unter ihr glimmt, zu einem Centralfeuer angefacht ist, unter deſſen Einfluß der Frühling anbrechen, und unsre Nation ihre Auferstehung feiem wird. — Dagegen ist das occidentale Judenthum noch vielfach von einer weit unlöſlichem Kruste, von den todten Resten der ersten Lebensregungen des modemen Geistes, von der anorganischen Kalkschale einer abgestorbenen rationalistischen Aufklärung umgeben, die nicht vom Feuer des jüdischen Patnotismus geschmolzen, die nur gebrochen werden kann durch einen von außen kommenden Druck, unter deſſen Wucht Alles, was keine Zukunft hat, den Geist aufgeben muß. — Im Gegenſatze zur Orthodoxie, welche nicht von außen zerstört werden kann, ohne den Embryo der jüdischen Nationalität, der unter ihr schlummert, zu gefährden, kann der harte Panzer, der noch die Herzen unsrer modemen Culturjuden umgibt, nur durch einen gewaltigen Stoß von außen zertrümmert werden, den die Weltverhältniſſe vielleicht schon in naher Zukunft auszuüben berufen ſind. — Das von den Stürmen der Revolution schon ſo oft beschädigte und immer wieder restaunrte alte Gerüste der europäischen Geſellschaft kracht und ſeufzt an allen Ecken und Enden; es hält keinen Sturm mehr aus. — Jene zwischen der Revolution und Reaktion stehenden Mittelweſen, welche dazu bestimmt ſind, die modeme Geſellschaft groß zu ziehen und, nachdem ſie erstarkt ist, von ihr, wie die Skorpionmutter von ihren Jungen, verschlungen zu werden — jene Ammen des Fortschntts, welche dem Schöpfer ſelbst Weisheit, Mäßigung und Sparſamkeit predigen, damit er ſich in ſeinen Schöpfungen nicht überstürze — jene Träger der Cultur, jene Retter der Geſellschaft und Verwalter der Sparkaſſen: die Spekulanten in Politik, in Religion, in Philoſophie und in Industne, ſie überleben den letzten Sturm nicht. — Mit den übngen Ammen des Fortschntts werden auch
