formalism, the smoldering fire of ancient Jewish patriotism will break out again, by which all of Jewry will be newly revived. On the common ground of Jewish patriotism, the old believers and the enlightened, the poor and the rich, will recognize one another again as the descendants of the same heroes who took up the fight with the most powerful and civilized peoples of the ancient world, with Egyptians and Assyrians, with Greeks and Romans, and fought it through to the end of that world, which they alone survived, — as children of the same tribe that, like no people in world history, has steadfastly endured a two-thousand-year martyrdom and has always held high and kept sacred the banner of its nationality, the scroll of the law, for which it was persecuted....
At this moment, as other work forces me to interrupt my correspondence with you, I am handed a work, just published in Hebrew, by a strictly orthodox Jewish scholar who, after a thorough treatment of the Jewish question of nationality from the Talmudic standpoint, arrives at precisely the same results as the Christian Frenchman in his “New Oriental Question,” results which I can endorse in every respect. Of this Hebrew work, too, as of the French one, I wish to communicate to you the main content in a German translation.*) The author concludes his work with the words:
