remain just as fruitless as the reform efforts which are directly aimed at this. In exile, Judaism cannot be regenerated; through reforms and philanthropic endeavors, it can at most be brought to apostasy. And no reformer and no tyrant will succeed in this. —
The Jewish masses will only participate in the great historical movement of modern humanity when they have a Jewish fatherland. But as long as the mass of Jews persists in its exceptional position, the relatively few Jews who vainly try everything to escape this false position of the Jewish people individually will be far more painfully affected by it than the masses, who feel only unhappy, but not dishonored. —
Therefore, the Jew, whether orthodox or not, cannot escape the task of contributing to the elevation of Jewry as a whole. — Every Jew, even the baptized, is jointly liable for the rebirth of Israel.
Once one understands the infinitely tragic role which the Jewish people have played in history to this day, one also recognizes the only means for the definitive remedy of our misery. This means is not as impracticable today as it might seem at first glance. It lies both in the sympathies of the French people and in the interest of French politics that France should extend its work of redemption to the Jewish nation as well, after its victorious armies have cast down the modern Nebuchadnezzars from the height from which they could issue arrogant decrees and ukases against the oppressed peoples. — It must be in France's interest to see the road to India and China occupied by peoples who will follow it to the death, in order to fulfill the historical task that has fallen to it since its great Revolution.
But what people would be more suited to this than the Jewish people, who
