the soil once taken into possession by a nation is never sufficient for long to feed its inhabitants; and the peoples had to fight one another and make slaves of each other, or let ruling and serving classes arise in their own midst.
— But the social animal kingdom, which lived from the mutual exploitation of men, is coming to an end, since modern science and industry have come to rule the world. The civilized peoples are preparing themselves for the common exploitation of nature, by means of a labor based on the achievements of science, which no longer requires any mediating parasites, and therefore will no longer allow them to arise. They are preparing for this new era (not to be confused with the Prussian one) through the struggle for a free national soil, through the destruction of all race and class rule from without and from within, through a free association of all productive forces, in which the hostile opposition of capitalist speculation and productive labor will disappear simultaneously with that of philosophical speculation and scientific labor.
— I know well that in Judaism, too, the need for healthy labor relations, based on the exploitation of nature by man, is deeply felt; I know the great efforts which are being made among us to educate our younger Jewish generation to be useful workers. But I also know that the Jews in exile can never devote themselves to such labors, at least for the most part, because they lack the first condition for them, the native soil, and because they cannot mix with the peoples among whom they live scattered, without becoming unfaithful to their national cult. 111 einmal von einer Nation in Beſitz genommene Boden niemals lange aus, ſeine Bewohner zu emähren; und die Völker mußten ſich gegenſeitig bekämpfen und zu Sklaven machen, oder in ihrer eignen Mitte herrschende und dienende Klaſſen aufkommen laſſen. — Aber das ſoziale Thierreich, welches von der gegenſeitigen Ausbeutung der Menschen lebte, geht zu Ende, ſeitdem die modeme Wiſſenschaft und Industne die Welt beherrschen. Die civiliſirten Völker bereiten ſich vor zur gemeinſamen Ausbeutung der Natur, mittelst einer auf die Errungenschaften der Wiſſenschaft ſich stützenden Arbeit, welche keiner vermittelnden Schmaroßer mehr bedarf, und ſie daher auch nicht mehr aufkommen laſſen wird. Sie bereiten ſich vor auf dieſe neue Aera (nicht mit der preußischen zu verwechſeln) durch die Erkämpfung eines freien nationalen Bodens, durch die Vemichtung jeder Racer- und Klaſſenherrschaft von außen und von innen, durch eine freie Aſſociation aller Produktivkräfte, in welcher der feindſelige Gegenſatz von Kapitalistenspekulation und produktiver Arbeit gleichzeitig mit jenem von philoſophischer Spekulation und wiſſenschaftlicher Arbeit schwinden wird. — Wohl weiß ich, daß auch im Judenthum das Bedürfniß geſunder Arbeitsverhältniſſe, welche die Ausbeutung der Natur durch den Menschen zur Baſis haben, tief gefühlt wird; ich kenne die großen Anstrengungen, welche unter uns gemacht werden, um unſere jüngere jüdische Generation zu nützlichen Arbeitem zu erziehen. Aber ich weiß auch, daß die Juden im Exil ſich ſolchen Arbeiten, wenigstens der Mehrzahl nach, niemals widmen können, weil ihnen die erste Bedingung zu denſelben, der vaterländische Boden fehlt, und weil ſie ſich nicht mit den Völkem, unter welchen ſie zerstreut leben, vermischen können, ohne ihrem Nationalcultus untreu zu werden. Jene löblichen Anstrengungen für geſündere jüdische Arbeitsverhältniſſe werden daher, weil ſie indirekt auf die Zerstörung des jüdischen Cultus hinaus laufen, im Ganzen
