a deeper look into the life of nature and history, the historical movement in contemporary Jewry has already taken care to open the eyes of the nationalists; for even in the Occident, where the Jews are in the closest contact with general civilization through a thousand threads, the Enlightenment could do no harm to the ancient Jewish cult. The majority of occidental Jews still pay homage to it today. Neither emancipation, nor Christian proselytizing, which speculated on material advantages and religious indifferentism, could move the great majority to apostasy. On the contrary, in recent times, sympathies for the ancient Jewish life, which are increasing every day, have appeared even among those who formerly pursued apostasy from Judaism as a humanistic ideal. — The leveling tendencies, however, have remained and will always remain without any influence on those Jews who form the great Jewish mass of people.
The mass is nowhere moved to progress by intellectual abstractions, the driving forces of which lie everywhere much deeper than even the socialist revolutionaries knew. With the Jews, even more so than with nations that are oppressed on their own soil, national independence must precede any politico-social progress. A common native soil is for them the first condition for healthier working conditions. The social human being, like social plants and animals, requires for his thriving and advancement a wide, free soil, without which he sinks to a parasite who can only nourish himself at the expense of foreign production.
The parasitic way of gaining one's living through the exploitation of men has, to be sure, played a great role in the developmental history of mankind thus far, and is by no means peculiar to the Jews alone. As long as science and industry were still in their infancy, the
