The Rabbi took the flower and moistened it with his tears. Then the withered rose blossomed again, and the Rabbi spoke to the knight:
"Do not wonder, friend, that the withered one blossoms again in my hand; she has, like our people, the quality of awakening to life through the warm breath of love, however long she may have been torn from the soil in which she was rooted, and withered abroad. Israel, too, will blossom again with youthful freshness, and the holy spark that now glows beneath the ashes will flare up brightly again, when we shall one day meet in life."
The paths of the Rabbi and the Knight, dear friend, meet today. As the Rabbi is our people, so the Knight is none other than the French, who today, as in the Middle Ages, have sent their soldiers to Syria, and prepared the ways of God in the wilderness.
Have you never read the words of the prophet Isaiah?
"Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and announce to her that her time is fulfilled, that her sins are forgiven, for she has received double her punishment. — Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Eternal, calls the voice; in the West they will prepare a path for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, every mountain and hill brought low, the crooked shall be made straight, and the hilly land a plain. — Then the glory of the Eternal will be revealed, and all flesh shall recognize that His mouth has spoken." ²)
Do you not believe you see our present time depicted in these words with which the second Isaiah begins his prophecies, as well as in those others with which the prophet Obadiah concludes his ³),? Is not help near...
