to do for the restoration of the Jewish nationality, consists first of all in keeping alive the hope for our political rebirth, and reawakening it where it slumbers. If then the world events that are brewing in the Orient permit a practical start to the restoration of the Jewish state, this start will likely first consist in the founding of Jewish colonies in the land of the fathers, for which France is without doubt inclined to offer a hand. — You know what a part the Jews took in the subscription for the Syrian victims of slaughter. It was Cremieux who took the initiative, the same Cremieux who, twenty years ago, had traveled with Sir Moses Montefiore to Syria to protect the Jews against the persecutions of the Christians. — In the Journal des Débats, which otherwise seldom publishes poems, a poem by Leon Halevi appeared at the time of the Syrian expedition, who perhaps, just as little as Cremieux, was thinking of the national rebirth of Israel. Nevertheless, his beautiful stanzas can hardly have been written otherwise than in anticipation of this rebirth. — While the poet of the "Swallows" still laments questioningly:
"Where is the hero, where is the sage, Who revives you anew, O people, Who, a savior, lifts you back onto the track Of world history?"
the French poet already answers with enthusiastic confidence:
You will be reborn, fearful cities! A breath of security Will always hover over your shores, Where our colors will have flown! Let one more supreme call come

92 für die Wiederherstellung der jüdischen Nationalität zu thun ha- ben, besteht zunächst dann, die Hoffnung auf unsre politische Wiedergeburt lebendig zu erhalten, und sie da, wo sie schlummert, wieder zu erwecken. Erlauben sodann die Weltereignisse, welche sich im Onent vorbereiten, einen praktischen Anfang zur Wieder- herstellung des jüdischen Staates, so wird dieser Anfang zunächst wohl in der Gründung jüdischer Colonieen im Lande der Väter bestehen, wozu Frankreich ohne Zweifel die Hand zu bieten ge- neigt ist. — Sie wissen, welchen Antheil die Juden an der Subsknption für die synschen Schlachtopfer nahmen. Cremieur war es, der die Initiative ergnff, derselbe Cremieur, der vor zwanzig Jahren mit Sir Moses Montefiore nach Synen gereist war, um die Juden gegen die Verfolgungen der Chnsten in Schuß zu nehmen. — Im Joumal des Debats, das sonst selten Gedichte aufnimmt, erschien zur Zeit der synschen Expedition ein Gedicht von Leon Halevi, der vielleicht so wenig, wie Cremieur, dabei an die nationale Wiedergeburt Israels dachte. Dennoch können seine schönen Strophen kaum anders, als im Vorgefühl dieser Wiedergeburt gedichtet worden sein. — Wenn der Dichter der „Schwalben“ noch fragend klagt: „Wo bleibt der Held, wo bleibt der Weise, Der Dich von Neuem, Volk, belebt, Der Dich, ein Heiland, ins Geleise Der Weltgeschichte wieder hebt?“ so antwortet der französische Dichter schon mit begeisterter Zu- versicht: Vous renaitrez, cités craintives! Un souffle de sécunté Planera toujours sur vos nves, Où nos couleurs auront flotté! Vienne encore un appel suprême!
