wherever the flood of events may have carried it, from all ends of the world its gaze has always been directed, and still is directed, toward Jerusalem. — With the sure racial instinct of its cultural-historical calling to unite and fraternize the world and mankind in the name of their eternal Creator, the All-One, this people has preserved its nationality in its religion, and has inseparably bound both in the inalienable land of the fathers. — No modern people striving for a fatherland can deny it its own, without carrying within itself the most fatal contradiction, losing faith in itself, and committing moral suicide.

VII wohin auch die Fluth der Ereignisse es getragen, von allen Enden der Welt aus den Blick stets nach Jeruſalem genchtet hat und noch nchtet. — Mit dem ſichem Raceninnstinkte ſeines culturhistonschen Berufs, Welt und Menschen zu einigen und zu verbrüdem im Namen ihres ewigen Schöpfers, des All-Einen, hat dieſes Volk ſich in ſeiner Religion ſeine Nationalität conſervirt, und beide untrennbar verbunden im unveräußerlichen Lande der Väter. — Kein modemes, nach einem Vaterlande nngendes Volk kann ihm das ſeinige vorenthalten, ohne den tödtlichsten Widerspruch mit ſich herum zu tragen, an ſich ſelbst irre zu werden und einen moralischen Selbstmord zu begehen. So zeitgemäß aber die jüdische Nationalitätsfrage dem unbefangenen Beobachter, ſo unzeitgemäß muß ſie dem Culturjuden in Deutschland erscheinen, wo der liberale wie der reaktionäre Judenseind zur Beschönigung ſeines Judenhasses auf den Unterschied zwischen der jüdischen und germanischen Race hinweist — in Deutschland, wo die jüdische Nationalität das letzte Argument zu ſein scheint für die Verweigerung von politischen und bürgerlichen Rechten, die man von ganz andem Bedingungen, als der Uebemahme aller bürgerlichen und politischen Pflichten abhängig macht — in Deutschland,
