supernaturalists study natural science. — As you see, esteemed friend, the Sabbath law already gives us the certainty of the unanimous and eternal divine law that prevails in nature and history. — Only to those who do not comprehend the revelations of the religious genius of the Jews does the historical development of humanity appear as a lawless, indefinite, infinite "progress," in contrast to the life of nature, which, because it has completed its developmental history, appears as a closed cycle whose laws are predictable. You understand that this apparent difference between the laws of nature and those of history is merely the result of a subjective perception that cannot elevate itself to the great, divine world law. — Just as little as the freedom of the creative being of history is, in fact, lawless arbitrariness, just as little is its progress an infinite one.
Free in the natural sense is every being that can live according to its own destiny, its inner calling, or its nature, and develop uninhibited from without. Morally free is only that being which lives according to its destiny with consciousness and will, whose will coincides with the law or will of God. Every other will is arbitrariness, which owes its existence not to the holy, unified, divine essence of the one who wills, but to one-sided impulses. This ability to follow desires and whims, which lead astray from the path of reason and morality, man possesses only as long as his being is not fully formed; and he has truly no cause to be proud of this negative capacity, which is nothing more than a sickness, a developmental sickness of humanity.
