plant life, is already fully developed and formed in our epoch.
"Man errs as long as he strives," says Goethe; but there is no striving without a goal. — The goal of human striving in the course of historical development is the recognition of the law to which all three spheres of life are subject, the social life as well as the organic and cosmic.
The world law is the law of origin and development, or to use the common expression, the law of "Progress." — Completely, and in all three spheres of life, this law has not yet been recognized. For the complete recognition of it, a part of the object is still missing: the conclusion of social development. The law of history can therefore not yet be scientifically recognized today: the ways of Providence are still dark for us. — But indeed, thanks to the religious genius of the Jews and their divine revelations, they have been brought ever closer to the human spirit from the beginning of their history, first in a prophetic, then in a mystical manner, and finally by way of philosophical speculation. — It still remains to explore the law of history by way of the empirical sciences.
What we recognize from the present standpoint of science about the law of the origin and development of cosmic, organic, and social life, I have already endeavored to demonstrate elsewhere. ²⁾ — Through studies in natural science and history, I have come to the conviction that one law underlies all phenomena of motion and life of the spheres in space, of the organisms on earth, and of the peoples in history.

82 das Pflanzenleben, in unsrer Epoche bereits und ausgebildet ist. „Der Mensch irrt, ſo lange er strebt“, ſagt Goethe; aber es gibt kein Streben ohne Ziel. — Das Ziel des humanen Strebens im Verlaufe der geschichtlichen Entwicklung ist die Erkenntniß des Geſetzes, dem alle drei Lebenssphären unterworfen ſind, das ſoziale Leben ſowohl, wie das organische und kosmische. Das Weltgeſetz ist das Geſetz der Entstehung und Entwicklung, oder um den landläufigen Ausdruck zu gebrauchen, das Geſetz des „Fortschntts“. — Vollständig, und in allen drei Lebenssphären, ist dieſes Geſetz noch nicht erkannt. Zur vollständigen Erkenntniß desſelben fehlt noch ein Theil des Objekts: der Schluß der ſozialen Entwicklung. Das Geſetz der Geschichte kann darum heute noch nicht wiſſenschaftlich erkannt werden: die Wege der Vorsehung ſind noch dunkel für uns. — Wohl aber ſind ſie, Dank dem religiöſen Genie der Juden und ihren göttlichen Offenbarungen, vom Beginne ihrer Geschichte an, zunächst in prophetischer, ſodann in mystischer Weiſe, endlich auf dem Wege der philosophischen Spekulation dem menschlichen Geiste immer näher gebracht worden. — Es bleibt noch übng, das Geſetz der Geschichte auf dem Wege der Erfahrungswiſſenschaften zu erforschen. Was wir auf dem heutigen Standpunkte der Wiſſenschaft vom Geſetze der Entstehung und Entwicklung des kosmischen, organischen und ſozialen Lebens erkennen, habe ich bereits an andem Orten nachzuweiſen mich bemüht. ²⁾ — Durch naturwiſſenschaftliche und geschichtliche Studien bin ich zu der Ueberzeugung gelangt, daß ein Geſetz allen Bewegungs- und Lebenserscheinungen der Sphären im Weltraume, der Organismen auf der Erde und der Völker in der Geschichte zu Grunde liegt.
