The people were not allowed to grumble about their exploitation by the great ones, in which Jew- ry acted as the broker. So it took religion as a pretext. "The crucifiers of Christ" should exploit us? one cried. "Hep! Hep!" Such occasional anti-Jewish riots were not at all inconvenient for the "great ones." After all, the Jews were thereby kept in dependence and brokerly compliance and were not allowed to presume to demand the emancipation of their people as "brokerage." Now, it cannot be denied at all that the ab- stract, money-industrial and haggling spirit of the Jews has contributed much to the flourishing of trade and industry in Germany. Interest, and not the ideal, builds states, and if we imagine interest as a per- sonality, its means to an end are in the rarest of cases pure and noble. Despotic princes in constant struggle with a despotic and rapacious nobility, a peasantry that differed from the Negro slave scarcely by anything other than the color of its skin, a bourgeoisie that was still very fragmen- tary, almost problematic, well into the time of the Crusades. Thus Germanic society presented itself, while in Italy, France and Spain culture was already flourishing. Into this confused, clumsy-Germanic element penetrated the smooth, cunning, elastic Jewry; with all its realistic talent intellectually, i.e., as far as the intelligence of cunning is concerned, well suited to look down upon Germandom, taming the monarchical, knightly, German dolt by assisting its evil pas- sions. The Jew was not attached to his former fatherland. From his host land he became more alien- ated every day and the memories of the former were only for- mulas to him. On the other hand, nature had denied him the gift of amalgamating, of assimilating, with other peoples. He remained antagonistic toward their religion, aloof toward their customs, habits, and way of life. He could deceive his oppressors in everything, just not in the fact that he was and wanted to remain a Jew. His statutes were a permanent challenge and demonstration against

**„Hepp!
