The abstract realism of Judaism was thus violently imported into Occidental society by the Romans. Time and circumstances were favorable to its development and expansion. Judaism had become the realistic auxiliary of history and found for its work-shy, speculative realism a more fertile ground in the Occident than it had ever possessed in Palestine.
Quite naturally, this aroused the envy of the Occidental population, and since the great masses have always loved to make religion a cloak for their interests, the (ostensibly) religious Jew-hatred in the Occident formed with the spread of Christianity.
How idiotic the religious side of this hatred was is already clear from the fact that people wanted to hold the Jews responsible for the crucifixion of Christ; a procedure which, as is known, the Roman authorities had staged, cowardly yielding to the cries of a Jerusalemite mob. That Jewish mob in Christ's time did, after all, no more and no less than what the mob of all times and all peoples has always done, still does, and always will do. Crying "Hosanna!" today and "Crucify him!" tomorrow. But it is simply in human nature that it always pesters Providence and religion when it wants to commit follies or villainies. People have almost never throttled one another in wars without first, on both sides, calling upon the gods or our Lord God and forcing upon them or him the honor of an alliance, and so God and religion also had to serve as a pretext in all persecutions of the Jews, whereas in truth these were nothing but the struggle of the peoples and their instinct against the realistic Judaization of society, a struggle for existence.
Yes! If individual fanatical Jews in the Middle Ages had indeed — — — "slaughtered Christian children" at the Passover festival, — if such brain-crazed incidents had occurred, which is not historically verifiable, then these would be no different abominations than crimes are in general, and in no way justify a general religious hatred. Just as little as this
