aism" only became a product of the time after the destruction of Jerusalem.
The general hostility towards the Jews had other reasons. Firstly: in the Jews' aversion to real work. Secondly: in their legally prescribed hostility towards all non-Jews.
That a people which, in war and peace, professed the Code of Moses could not arouse any international sympathy will be admitted by anyone who has taken the trouble to read through the Mosaic law in the Bible even cursorily. Unimaginative and heartless, purely businesslike as in a treaty, ossified in formalism was the relationship of the Jews to Jehovah. In practical life, the most pronounced realism one can imagine. But in this respect as if cast from a single mold. Even the Jehovah of the Old Testament was a rigid realist. He acknowledged the existence of "other gods" and was animated by a competitive hatred against them.
Titus committed the most foolish act in world history imaginable by, after the destruction of Jerusalem, partly dragging the Jews into Roman captivity and partly violently dispersing them from then on.
In Rome there was just as little religious hatred. "Every god is welcome in Rome," said the proverb. Of course, if in the name of the gods who found their "salve hospes" in Rome, people caused mischief, tried to demolish the Roman temples, etc., then the Roman police would intervene. But what also made the Jews hated by the Romans was again their exclusive nature, coupled with the realistic spirit of haggling and usury that they brought into the Roman world.
This Roman world, like all of classical antiquity, was in a state of decay when the Jews were imported. Semitism thus found fertile ground for its realism, and already in Constantine's time, the "New Jews" (Christians) – constituted the financial power in Rome.
Among all peoples of antiquity, the trading Phoenicians and Carthaginians not excepted, it was unseemly to engage in what is called in modern form agiotage, haggling, and usury. If we encounter "money negotiators" in the Middle Ages, they were Jews, whom one used, but – despised. This world-

In Rom herrschte eben ſo wenig Glaubenshass.
