112 The Jews, considered as a people, are not rich; in their ranks there is a larger number of poor persons than among the adherents of any other faith, so that the percentage of the average wealth of the Jewish people is far more insignificant than among other peoples (The Statist).
This sentence characterizes the average relationship of the economic conditions of all Jewry from all countries. If one were to take the average relationship only from the individual countries, one would have to say that the Jews in our countries are on average prosperous, and that those of Eastern Europe and their exclaves in England and America, as well as those in Asia and North Africa, are poor.
Although conditions with us are therefore satisfactory, a difference becomes conspicuous upon somewhat closer inspection between the circumstances in Western and those in Central Europe, namely Austria-Hungary. Here too — apart from the very thin capitalist layer — there is nothing more to be seen today of an upward class movement; on the contrary, one could much rather report, if not of a progressive pauperization, then at least of an effective turn for the worse, the causes of which we will soon discuss. In Hungary and in Moravia,
is contrasted by the farmhouse, which everywhere is worth a few — in the better- cultivated regions, many — thousands. And despite all the growth of the proletariat, this middle resident-Christian citizen and farmer class still represents a satisfactory contingent, in comparison to the immense Jewish misery in Eastern Europe. — Despite the infinitely hard struggle, despite the ingenuity and energy acknowledged even by the most hostile side, the national wealth of the Jews today is equal to zero, and ⁷⁄₈ of Jewry are in an uninterrupted struggle against crushing need.
Pinsker aptly says about this: "As isolated Jews, but not as a Jewish nation, we have for centuries been waging the hard and unequal struggle for existence; in isolation, each one had to squander his spirit and his energy for a piece of land and a bit of oxygenated air. — In this desperate struggle we did not succumb. But the war we waged, and which we will continue to wage for God knows how long, was no longer for the fatherland, but for the wretched preservation of millions of impoverished, peddling Jews."

112 Die Juden, als Volk betrachtet, sind nicht reich; in ihren Reihen befindet sich eine größere Anzahl armer Personen als unter den Bekennem irgend eines anderen Glaubens, so daß der Prozentsatz des durchschnittlichen Reichthums des jüdischen Volkes weit genngfügiger ist als bei anderen Völkem (The Statist). Es kennzeichnet dieser Satz das Durchschnittsverhältniß der wirtschaftlichen Zustände des Gesammtjudentums aus allen Ländem. Nähme man das Durchschnittsverhältniß nur aus den einzelnen Ländem, so müßte man sagen, daß die Juden in unseren Ländem im Durchschnitt wohlhabend, und daß die Osteuropas und ihre Exklaven in England und Amenka, ebenso wie die in Asien und Nordafnka arm sind. Obwohl bei uns also die Zustände befnedigend sind, wird doch bei einigermaßen genauerem Sehen ein Unterschied augen- fällig zwischen den Verhältnissen in West- und denen in Mit- teleuropa, namentlich Österreich-Ungams. Es ist auch hier — von der sehr dünnen kapitalistischen Schichte abgesehen — von einer aufsteigenden Klassenbewegung heute nichts mehr zu sehen, im Gegenteil könnte man viel eher, wenn auch nicht von einer progredienten Paupensirung, so doch von einer effek- tiven Wendung zum Schlechteren benchten, über deren Ur- sachen wir bald sprechen werden. In Ungam und in Mähren, steht der Bauemhof gegenüber, welcher überall einige — in den besser- kultivirten Gegenden viele — Tausende Wert hat. Und trotz allen An- wachsens des Proletanats stellt dieser mittlere ansch-chnstliche Bürger und Bauemstand doch noch ein zufnedenstellendes Kontingent, im Ver- gleich zu den Unmaßen jüdischen Elends in Osteuropa. — Trotz des un- endlich schweren Kampfes, trotz der auch von feindlichster Seite aner- kannten Findigkeit und Energie ist das Nationalvermögen der Juden heute gleich Null und haben ⁷⁄₈ der Judenheit einen ununterbrochenen Kampf gegen erdrückende Not. Treffend sagt darüber Pinsker: „Als vereinzelte Juden aber nicht als jüdische Nation führen wir seit Jahrhunderten den harten und ungleichen Kampf ums Dasein, in der Vereinzelung mußte jeder für sich seinen Geist und seine Energie für ein Stück Boden und etwas sauerstoffhaltige Luft verzetteln. — In diesem verzweifelten Kampf unterlagen wir nicht. Aber der Kneg, den wir führten, und den wir noch weiß Gott wie lange führen werden, galt nicht mehr dem Vaterland, sondem der kümmerlichen Er- haltung von Millionen verelendeter, hausierender Juden.“
