Cunning, ruthlessness, lack of compassion, a completely one-sided intellectual development offer far more prospect of advancement in the daily competitive struggle than a fine mind, noble character, and harmonious education” (Hertz). In addition, the current disintegration of the old religious and ghetto milieu, in which people were at least something full and whole in their own genre, has produced a generation of empty, hollow transitional people, who really had to become an element of decomposition for everything with which they came into contact. But only social circles of a high degree of cohesion are suited to produce firm characters. “The individuals of such circles are as if from a single mold, for they are completely flesh of the flesh and blood of the blood of their social group. Hence the elemen- tary moral strength of people in the struggle for their class, for their estate, for their nationality, to which they belong with all socializing moments and therefore also with every fiber of their heart. In contrast, the wavering and the lack of resolve of people when one of those moments is dissolved between them and their own, and it is completely unnatural and artificial where the individual acts as a representative of a group to which he is connected only by some loose, ephemeral bond. On this is based, of course, the eternal comedy of the parvenu” (Gumplowicz). The inner turmoil and lack of cohesion of these transitional people, which characterizes the Jews who are floating on top in the present day, was the reason for considering these qualities to be the fundamental qualities of the entire race in general. Genebenheit, Rückſichtslosigkeit, Mangel an Mit- gefühl, eine ganz einſeitige Geistesbildung bieten im Konkur- renzkampfe des Tages weit mehr Ausſicht auf Fortkommen als feiner Verstand, edler Charakter und harmonische Bildung“ (Hertz). Dazu tntt noch, daß die gegenwärtige Zerſetzung des alten religiösen und Ghettomilieus, in dem die Menschen wenig- stens in ihrem Genre noch etwas Volles und Ganzes waren, ein Geschlecht leerer, hohler Übergangsmenschen gezeitigt hat, die wirklich ein Element der Dekompoſition für alles werden mußten, womit ſie nur in Berührung kamen. Nur ſoziale Kreise von hohem Kohäſionsgrade aber ſind geeignet, feste Charaktere zu erzeugen. „Die Individuen ſolcher Kreiſe ſind wie aus einem Guß, denn ſie ſind ganz Fleisch vom Fleisch und Blut vom Blut ihrer ſozialen Gruppe. Daher die elemen- tare moralische Kraft der Menschen im Kampfe für ihre Klaſſe, für ihren Stand, für ihr Volkstum, dem ſie mit allen vergeſellschaftenden Momenten und daher auch mit allen Fasem ihres Herzens angehören. Dagegen das Schwanken und die Haltlosigkeit der Menschen, wenn zwischen ihnen und den Ihngen eines jener Momente gelöst ist, und gar unnatürlich und gekünstelt da, wo der Einzelne ſich als Vertreter einer Gruppe gebärdet, mit der ihn nur irgend ein loſes, ephemeres Band verbindet. Darauf beruht ja die ewige Komik des Parveni- tums“ (Gumplowicz). Die innere Zernſſenheit und Ungeschlos- ſenheit dieſer Übergangsmenschen, welche die in der Gegenwart obenauf schwimmenden Juden kennzeichnet, war der Anlaß, dieſe Eigenschaften für die Grundeigenschaften der ganzen Raſſe überhaupt zu halten. Man bedachte nicht, man ſah nicht, daß neben den Leuten, denen z. B. die Wiſſenschaft wirklich nur ein Geschäft ist, daß neben den herzerfrorenen Plutokraten, neben den Perſonen, deren einziges Ziel wirklich nur ſkrupelloſe Streberei und Geldmacherei zu ſein scheint, neben den wie alles andere ſo auch ihr Judentum oft genug verleugnenden und oft genug beschimpfenden „Koſmopoliten“, — daß neben allen dieſen Kategonen, die eben ein Ergebniß des furchtbar diſſo- ziierenden Milieus ſind, es auch noch in Gold geprägte, aus Erz gegoſſene andere Juden gibt, nationale und perſönliche Cha- Zollschan, Das Raſſenproblem, 3.
