430 The most important influence that Zionism could have on the overall fate of Jewry would consist in the preserva- tion of cohesion through territorial unification. Inhabiting a territory in a dense mass is the only permanent protection against the dissolution of a race. Further- more, racial crossing, i.e., mixed marriage, can still be prevented by state or religious prohibitions. Since in most countries of Central and Western Europe the state-law barriers have been cleared away, only religious influence remains as a conserving obstacle.
However, the Jewish religion is conserving only as a cere- monial religion, i.e., only the strict, indeed only the fanatically-intolerant Orthodoxy that hinders the development of individuality with a correct instinct, has a conserving effect. The more abstract and philosophical a religion becomes, the more the external symbols recede, the more it seeks to influence its confessors merely personally and no longer socially determinatively, the more its sphere of influence is eroded by cultural influences, by personal indifference, by other considerations, etc., the more insignificant it becomes altogether. The Mosaic religion is also only dragging itself along with difficulty in Western Europe. But 100 years ago, the Western European Jews were where the Eastern European Jews are today. The Orthodoxy of the East, too, will not be able to withstand the modern culture that is slowly but surely penetrating there as well. The genuine, inner, abstract religion that is found here and there is not bound to tradition, and “positive” religion — according to rationalistic considerations and all signs of actual development that are also statistically graspable — can hardly be considered a real element of cohesion for much longer. For the turning away from Judaism, which has so far been constantly increasing in an arithmetic progression, must, at the moment when indifference to religion once penetrates the broad masses, turn into a geometric progression.

430 Der wichtigste Einfluß, den der Zionis- mus auf die Gesammt- schicksale des Judentums nehmen könnte, bestünde in der Erhal- tung der Zusammengehöngkeit durch terntonale Vereinigung. Die Bewohnung eines Terntonums in geschlossener Masse ist der einzige dauemde Schutz gegen die Auflösung einer Rasse. Außer- dem kann die Rassenkreuzung, d. h. die Mischehe, noch verhindert werden durch staatsgesetzliche oder religionsgesetzliche Ver- bote. Da in den meisten Ländem Mittel- und Westeuropas die staatsgesetzlichen Schranken aus dem Wege geräumt sind, bleibt nur noch der religiöse Einfluß als konservierendes Hinder- nis bestehen. Konservierend ist die jüdische Religion aber nur als Zer- monialreligion, d. h. konservierend wirkt nur die strenge, ja nur die die Entfaltung der Individualität mit nchtigem Instinkt hindemde fanatisch-intolerante Orthodoxie. Je abstrakter und philosophischer eine Religion wird, je mehr die äußeren Sym- bole zurücktreten, je mehr sie auf ihre Bekenner bloß persönlich und nicht mehr sozial bestimmend einzuwirken trachtet, um so mehr wird ihr Wirkungsgebiet durch kulturelle Einflüsse, durch persönliche Lässigkeit, durch andere Rücksichten usw. arro- diert, um so bedeutungsloser wird sie überhaupt. Die mosaische Religion schleppt sich ja auch in Westeuropa nur mehr mühsam fort. Die westeuropäischen Juden aber waren vor 100 Jahren dort, wo die osteuropäischen heute sind. Auch der Orthodoxis- mus des Ostens wird der langsam aber sicher auch dorthin ein- dnngenden modemen Kultur nicht standhalten können. Die sich hin und wieder findende echte, innere, abstrakte Religion ist an die Tradition nicht gebunden, und die „positive“ Religion kommt — rationalistischen Erwägungen zufolge und nach allen auch statistisch faßbaren Anzeichen der tatsächlichen Entwick- lung — als ein wirkliches Element der Kohäsion kaum mehr lange in Betracht. Denn die bis jetzt in anthmetischer Pro- gression ständig steigende Abkehr vom Judentum muß in dem Moment, wo die Gleichgültigkeit gegen die Religion einmal die breite Masse durchdnngt, in eine geometnsche Pro- gression umschlagen.
