428 But the weakness of Zionism lies especially, even today, in the lack of “competence” and in the lack of financial strength. Such factors, through which alone the Zionist movement could have developed into a real power structure, are not students—who after their student days, with few exceptions, put their “idealism” aside—and not desperados, but the broad Western Jewish bourgeoisie and the official representations of Jewry, the communities and the large charitable funds. Only through the recognition by this official Jewry would Zionism be able to acquire the competence that would also compel external factors to recognize it and the real means of power that would somewhat correspond to its pretensions. Today, however, there are three great facts that push the achievement of the Zionist goal—which alone could still bring about the recovery of the race— into the distant future:
- The rejection by all circles which hold power within Judaism itself.
- The ignoring of Zionism by Turkey, which would have an active interest in a Zionist solution to the Jewish question.
- The ignoring of Zionism by all those states that are passively interested in the Jewish question. To a significant extent, points 2 and 3 can be traced back to point 1, that is, to the lack of competence and the lack of financial strength. The rejection by the authoritative circles within Jewry itself has many reasons, of which two of the most important lie with the Zionists themselves: very great tactical errors and very serious errors in argumentation. Whoever, feeling similarly to the mass of the still-religious people, has come to the realization that the Jewish-national idea is more than its currently common official argumentation claims, that it is more than the mere imitation of the national fashion of other peoples, than the mere reaction to anti-Semitism; whoever decides for Zionism, not merely because he believes the Jews could
