410 ify the instinctual material of their descendants in the sense of the highest cultural goals, an aspiration that is clearly manifested in the Mosaic and later legislation; 2. the possibility — unhindered by the nature, whether advantageous or disadvantageous, of the instinctual material of contemporary Jews — of using the underlying predispositions for the benefit of those who possess them, for the community, and for the high goals of culture.
To these conclusions could be added the point that even the analysis of the instinctual material of pre- sent-day Jews shows it to be versatile enough and qualitatively suitable to have an eminently culture-promoting effect, even just as it is — without first having to be converted into a fund of predispositions. Through the series of cultural deeds that were mentioned in the previous investigations, such a point has already been partially made. As for the 'spiritual' and 'intellectual' predispositions themselves, which have been, as it were, extracted from 'instinct' and become amorphous — we will let a short treatise follow on each of them as well. In order to get to know the latitude of the Jewish spiritual capacity, it is necessary to compare it with that of the other peoples. Among the spiritual processes that among all nations and at all times have most deeply stirred the life of the people, is first and foremost the eternal contrast and struggle between conservatism and liberal- ism, although these words in their current politi- cal sense do not by any means completely cover the concept for which they are used. It is about the contrast between the free development of the individual and of society on the one hand, and state and religious patronage, subordination to authority, submission to con- vention and tradition on the other. There is no period in all of world history where the conflict between these two principles has not played a role, and sometimes an immensely large role, in the inner life of a people.

410 stinktmatenal ihrer Nachfahren im Sinne der höchsten Kultur- ziele zu modifiziren, ein Streben, das ſich in der mosaischen und späteren Geſetzgebung deutlich manifestirt; 2. die Möglichkeit — ungehindert durch die gleichgültig, ob vortheilhafte oder unvortheilhafte Art des Instinktmatenals der zeitgenöſſischen Juden — die demſelben zugrunde liegenden Prädispoſitionen in für die Träger derſelben, für die Geſammtheit und für die Hochziele der Kultur erspneßlichem Sinne zu verwenden. Dieſen Folgerungen könnte ſich der Hinweis darauf an- schließen, daß ſelbst die Analyſe des Instinktmatenals der heu- tigen Juden daſſelbe als vielſeitig genug und als qualitativ ge- eignet erweist, auch schon allein als ſolches — ohne erst in einen Fond von Prädispoſitionen umgeſetzt werden zu müſſen — eminent kulturförderlich zu wirken. Durch die Reihe kultureller Taten, die in den bishengen Unterſuchungen zur Erwähnung kamen, ist ein ſolcher Hin- weis teilweise schon erfolgt. Was nun die aus dem „Instinkt“ herausgeschälten „ſeelischen“ und „intellektuellen“ gleichſam amorph gewordenen — Prädispoſitionen ſelbst betnfft, ſo wollen wir auch darüber je eine kurze Abhandlung folgen laſſen. Um die Latitude des jüdischen Seelenver- mögens kennen zu lemen, ist es nothwendig, ſie mit der der anderen Völker zu vergleichen. Zu den geistigen Prozeſſen, die unter allen Nationen und zu allen Zeiten das Volksleben am tiefsten aufgewühlt haben, gehört in erster Linie der ewige Ge- genſatz und Kampf zwischen Konſervativismus und Liberalis- mus, wobei jedoch dieſe Worte in ihrem gegenwärtigen politi- schen Sinne den Begnff, für den ſie geſetzt werden, durchaus nicht vollständig decken. Es handelt ſich um den Gegenſatz zwischen freier Entwicklung des Individuums und der Geſell- schaft einerſeits und staatlicher und religiöſer Bevormundung, Unterordnung unter die Autontät, Unterwerfung unter die Kon- vention und Tradition andererſeits. Es gibt keinen Zeitraum in der ganzen Weltgeschichte, wo nicht im inneren Volksleben der Widerstreit zwischen dieſen beiden Pnnzipien eine Rolle, und manchmal eine ungeheuer große Rolle, gespielt hat.
