However, the qualitative coloring of these drives is largely co-determined by the milieu, and their immediate, intuitive actualization is nowadays made more difficult due to the high level of civilization, as this pushes back instinctual activity through the necessity of training and forces a generally abstracting activity. Also, man is from the outset no longer like some lower quadruped a mere creature of instinct, but rather in all his actions conscious deliberation also plays a role, and in this respect, all his inherited instincts of a given content, fixed by direct inheritance, are to be regarded as just as many accumulated predispositions for tech- nical or intellectual activity of selectable content.
Here the discussion comes to the point of taking a position in the old philosophical dispute for and against the freedom of the will and of fully emphasizing the capacity of the consciously acting human for self-determination of his goals and purposes on the basis of the spiritual and intellectual predispositions left to him by his ancestors. If we draw conclusions from this for our topic, the following emerges:
- The early insight of the ancient Jews that they could emancipate themselves from their instincts, their will, petrified through an entire body of legislation, to mod- were not diminished from generation to generation, but rather thanks to inbreeding constantly increased. Only in this way could the people arise, whom Ibsen calls the “nobility of mankind.” On the other hand, however, the struggle for eternal ex- istence, which was also a commandment of chosenness, resulted in a selective breeding almost unparalleled in human history. In the struggle for existence of the nation, whose structure was shaken by sword and fire, by the harshest economic and moral pressure, and by constant temptations to apostasy, only the spiritually and morally strongest and physically toughest individuals could survive and reproduce.

Doch ist die Qualitätſfarbe dieſer Tnebe zum großen Teil durch das Milieu mitbedingt und dann ist ihre unmittelbare, intuitive Aktualisierung heutzutage infolge der hohen Zivili- ſationsstufe erschwert, da dieſelbe durch die Notwendigkeit der Schulung die Instinktbetätigung zurückdrängt und zu allgemein abstrahierender Tätigkeit zwingt. Auch ist der Mensch schon von vomherein nicht mehr wie irgend ein niederer Vierfüßler ein bloßes Instinkttier, ſondem bei allen ſeinen Handlungen spielt auch die bewußte Überlegung mit eine Rolle, und inſofem ſind dann alle ſeine angeerbten und durch geradlinige Vererbung fixierten Instinkte gegebenen Inhalts als ebenſo viele aufgestapelte Prädispoſitionen für tech- nische oder gedankliche Tätigkeit wählbarer Inhalts zu betrachten. Hier kommt die Diskuſſion zu dem Punkte, in dem alten Philoſophenstreit für und gegen die Freiheit des Willens Stel- lung zu nehmen und die Fähigkeit des bewußt handelnden Men- schen zur Selbstbestimmung ſeiner Ziele und Zwecke auf Grund der ihm von den Vorfahren hinterlaſſenen ſeelischen und intellektuellen Prädispoſitionen voll zu betonen. Ziehen wir daraus Schlüſſe auf unſer Thema, ſo ergibt ſich: 1. Die frühe Einſicht der alten Juden, von ihren Instink- ten ſich emanzipieren zu können, ihr durch eine ganze Gesetzgebung petnſizierter Wille, da- In- vermindert von Generation auf Generation übergingen, ſondem dank der Inzucht ſich stets steigerten. So erst konnte das Volk entstehen, welches Ibsen den „Adel der Menschheit“ nennt. Anderſeits aber ergab ſich aus dem Ringen nach dem ewigen Be- stande, das ebenfalls ein Gebot der Auſerwähltheit war, eine in der Menschheitsgeschichte fast beispielloſe Zuchtwahl. In dem Da- ſeinskampfe der Nation, die durch Schwert und Feuer, durch den härte- sten wirthschaftlichen und moralischen Druck und durch stets Abfalls- Verlockungen in ihrem Gefüge erschüttert wurde, konnten ſich nur die geistig und moralisch stärksten und phyſisch zähesten Individuen erhalten und fortpflanzen.
