408 intensification we therefore naturally find in an inbred group, where only homogeneous and mutually harmonious instincts fill the mneme. Insofar as such an inbred group surrenders to the impulsive striving for the actualization of these instincts, i.e., "lives itself out," it could literally in history as a merchant people, as a warrior caste, as an artist family, etc., in short as a group of peculiar a material meaning, indeed, it was interpreted in a warlike manner. The ideas of the intellectual and ethical genius Moses, which were ahead of their time, are at times suppressed by the primitive-brutal instincts of national politics. As the first and most striking biological result of this idea, we are confronted with the fact of the existence and the still unusual vitality and reproductive power of the Jews. This alone already indicates that the chosenness of the Jews is something different and deeper than the usual racial pride, which was unable to save other, much more powerful peoples from ruin. It achieved the eternal existence of the Jewish people through the biological effects of its intellectual goal and its moral commandment. From the duty of a pure and holy life resulted in a physiological sense a healthy and long-lasting life. Mosaism, as is known, made it its business to draw this consequence most clearly by issuing strict dietary and marital laws, thereby regulating the two main physiological functions of nutrition and reproduction in an exemplary manner. No less carefully was the spiritual education of the people organized, in that the Mosaic doctrine obligated all its confessors to the study of the Law. At the same time, the moral sense was cultivated; for the study of the Law not only instilled the commandments of family and neighborly love in the broad masses of the people, but also made them conscious of the special moral calling of Israel. If, through the determined efforts of numerous generations of thinkers and politicians, a people was bred with pure blood, poisoned neither by venereal diseases nor by alcohol, with a pronounced sense of family, ingrained habits of virtuous living, unusual mental agility, and an ideal spiritual orientation, then it was a self-evident supplementary measure that these highest ethical treasures were not surrendered to destruction on the path of intermingling with less carefully bred races. Sofem nun eine ſolche Inzucht- gruppe dem tnebhaften Streben nach Aktuali- ſierung dieſer Instinkte ſich überläßt, d. h. ſich „auslebt“, könnte ſie buchstäblich in der Geschichte als Handelsvolk, als Knegerkaste, als Künstler- familie usw., kurz als Gruppe von eigenartigem eine matenelle Bedeutung, ja, man legte ſie in knegenscher Weiſe aus. Die der Entwicklung voraneilenden Ideen des intellektuellen und ethischen Genies Mosis werden zeitweiſe von den pnmitiv-brutalen Instinkten der Nationalpolitik verdrängt. Als erstes und frappantestes biologisches Er- gebnis dieſer Idee tntt uns die Tatſache des Bestehens und der noch immer ungewöhnlichen Lebens- und Reproduktionskraft der Juden ent- gegen. Dies allein weist schon darauf hin, daß die Auserwähltheit der Juden etwas anderes und Tieferes ist als der gewöhnliche Raſſenstolz, der andere, viel mächtigere Völker vor dem Unter- gange nicht zu bewahren vermochte. Sie er- reichte den ewigen Bestand des jüdischen Volkes durch die biologischen Wirkungen ihres intellek- tuellen Zieles und ihres moralischen Gebotes. Aus der Pflicht eines reinen und heiligen Lebens ergab ſich in physiologischem Sinne ein geſundes und lange währendes Leben. Der Mosaiſmus ließ es ſich bekanntlich angelegen ſein, dieſe Konſequenz aufs klarste zu ziehen, indem er strenge Speiſe- und Ehegeſetze erließ, dem- nach die zwei physiologischen Hauptfunktionen der Emährung und Re- produktion in mustergültiger Weiſe regelte. Nicht minder ſorgſam wurde die geistige Erziehung des Volkes organiſiert, indem die mosaische Lehre alle ihre Bekenner zum Studium des Geſetzes verpflichtete. Gleichzeitig wurde der moralische Sinn gepflegt; denn das Studium des Geſetzes impfte nicht nur die Ge- bote der Familien- und Nächstenliebe den breiten Volksschichten ein, ſondem brachte ihnen auch die beſondere moralische Berufung Israels zum Bewußtſein. Wurde durch die zielbewußten Anstrengungen zahlreicher Gene- rationen von Denkem und Politikem ein Volk von reinem, weder durch venensche Krankheiten noch durch Alkohol vergiftetem Blute, von aus- geprägtem Familiensinn, eingewurzelten Gewohnheiten zum tugendhaften Leben, ungewöhnlicher geistiger Regſamkeit und idealer Geistesnchtung herangezüchtet, ſo war es eine ſelbstverständliche ergänzende Maßregel, daß dieſe höchsten ethischen Schätze nicht der Vemichtung auf dem Wege der Vermischung mit minder ſorgfältig gezüchteten Raſſen preis- gegeben wurden. Das Verbot der Mischehen bewirkte es, daß der erste raſſenbildende Faktor, die Vererbung, ſeine Wirkungskraft in höchster Potenz betätigen konnte, indem die angedeuteten Vorzüge nicht nur un-
