406 Man no longer wants to be a product of circumstances, but rather to form and shape the social situation and societal conditions according to his intellect. Mankind is setting out to become master of space and time.
In Judaism, the consciousness of the "spirit" has dawned, which stands opposite to nature. The ideas of morality and justice are therefore first blossomed in Judaism.
In this fact lies the actual pivot point of the significance of Judaism for world history.*
We now want, in order to reach conclusions, to repeat in summary something that was already developed in detail earlier:
- This line of thought acquires the character of established formulas in an essay by Nossig, "The Chosenness of the Jews in the Light of Biology" (Journal for Demography and Statistics of the Jews, 1905), with which we simultaneously return to our topic: If one reads the Bible with the help of the commentaries that Maimonides and other Jewish thinkers have left behind, one becomes convinced that the arbitrary personal God, with whom the Bible operates out of popular pedagogical considerations, is nothing other than the highest abstraction of Being, that his will coincides with the entirety of the recognized laws of nature. The moral conception of history of the Jews thus coincides with the natural-scientific one. Their history is not the product of divine arbitrariness, but of their relationship to the laws of nature. They by no means exclude themselves from world history, but, on the contrary, feel called upon on the basis of their worldview to intervene in it in a very specific way. And this leads us to the idea of chosenness. This too, just like the concept of God as the highest abstraction of Being, although the Bible contains it in the form of a revelation, is of course nothing other than the product of the Jewish people's own intellectual and moral abilities, of their mental labor. One sets out from the beginning on a completely misleading path if one understands this great idea simply as a particularly stark expression of the racial pride common to all peoples. Rather, its core is formed by something that fundamentally distinguishes the Jewish people and their history.
