405 as honorable as it would be. But what is correct about it is that in the great political revolutions that a century ago in France and now in Russia and in the Orient strive for the progress of the world, that moral idealism which originated in Palestine was the driving force. The fact that Jews themselves are also in the front ranks everywhere where there is rebellion against all reactionary powers, against formalism, and against the abuses that crush the people, is not of decisive significance.
Accordingly, Judaism could be described as the thesis of the autonomy of the spirit and of the cultural mission of the nation as well as of humanity.
While almost all of life represents a vegetation, i.e., a functioning of innate and acquired drives that does not penetrate into full consciousness, and to this extent the race theorists with their assertion that the spiritual individuality of the individual is given by the race, as we were able to demonstrate, are correct to a certain degree, — while thus the actions and being of the individual are as a rule really determined by the materiality surrounding him, the one who has become inwardly free can nevertheless also rise above this materiality, — through feeling or through thought.
Abstraction, reflection, free thought, free will, and free action form the counterweight to materiality and justify the opposition to naked materialism as a worldview.*
* Powerful components for cultural achievements can also be gained by diverting sexual drive forces from sexual goals and directing them toward new goals — a process that, according to Freud, is called sublimation. Thus, in the best cases, the original concentration of affects on sexual life becomes, through the setting of abstract ideals, a concentration in favor of civilizational creation, a firm will that combats innate passion and channels it into the desired canals. In the sense of this free but not any "instinctive" will, Chamberlain's thesis of the predominance of the will among the Semites may be correct.
