396 quickly became apparent that it was not a possible type of life for a large community. There, the focus must be directed at the species and at the efficacy of also entirely impersonal powers. History is the history of society, of the constitution and of law, of the economy and of science. The entire cultural history of the Middle Ages is a continuous series of compromises between the one-sided ideals that came into the world through Christianity, and the healthy sense for the real needs of life. Wellhausen rightly says it cannot be denied, "that only on the soil of culture does the individual thrive. Sunk in filth and need and barbarism, man cannot think of his soul, and before justice before God can have its turn, the justitia civilis must be stabilized. The higher thing becomes a stone if one offers it instead of bread." It is precisely through the great men of Judaism that the deep impulses of mercy and justice have come into the world; the strictly altruistic feeling of compassion for the poor and miserable and the warmth of human love began here. Palestine is the place where all higher ethics and human compassion have their historical origin. The cultural effects which the deep religiosity that arose here was able to trigger will probably be clear from this. It is furthermore probably clear that one cannot describe this religiosity as "sanctification by works," "lack of pious disposition," or as "crass materialism." But it is just as clear that for science and politics nothing would be more to be feared than a relapse into a fog of moods, sentiments, and urges. Certainly, one cannot completely dissolve the essence of religion into that of morality; it is certainly not merely a cultural need in the sense of a moral instrument, but it is even more a spiritual need. But just as little as "positive" religion is to be confused with genuine, real, de-churched religion, so little can and may this latter itself become a positive religion. Religion, that is, in the sense
