395 creature, through the elevation to the highest, timeless forms of being that occurs in the purest world of thought, ceases to be itself, and thereby finds its way into eternity, returns to the Godhead. True religiosity is precisely this spiritual consecration, is furthermore the reverence and awe before another's greatness, be it the mysterious processes in nature, be it the greatness of a historical past, be it the work of an artist, or be it the mystery of a "religion" resonating within us. Piety and religiosity are, in meaning, and even when one traces the significance of the latter word back to its etymological root, synonymous with moral earnestness. Only a complete misunderstanding has translated the word "religion" as "faith." Religiosity, confession, and rite are three fundamentally different, though interconnected, things. Religiosity is the autonomous character disposition, or one to be achieved through education and law; rite is something utilitarian for social and individual purposes; confession is the authoritatively handed-down worldview. Admittedly, what has been said there about religiosity is mere individual ethics. It is a matter of the heart, of spiritual culture, and can never become a motive for the legal order of a state. The state cannot concern itself only with the ennoblement and moral ideality of the individual, but it must also provide for the state and social forms of existence of entire peoples and for great universal cultural goals. It is impossible to build a society solely on the principle of love by eliminating the principle of law. The hyperboles of evangelical ethics lead only to a flight from the world, especially on the part of noble minds, to indifference towards the state and its tasks, to indifference towards life in general. Even in its very own domain, religion cannot get by with mere "disposition" and "faithfulness" alone; it requires the opera operanda, it requires external organization. When this was attempted in early Christianity, it very
