384 it would also have been necessary to first ram down these bulwarks, and for that, a completely different force of argumentation was required, a much more purely developed system of all sciences, a much sharper training in logical argumentation according to the laws of mathematics, which are difficult to challenge even by priestly powers, and only in this way could a "pure" science, lifted out of practical-purpose connections and existing for itself, emerge, as we actually owe it to Greek and modern occidental philosophy. But the powers innocent of this development, to whom we had to offer our thanksgiving sacrifice for this, are the imaginative legends of the Iliad and the monastic superstition of the Middle Ages.
The conservatism inherent in every religion can become antisocial and culture-inhibiting to the highest degree and then make "struggles" necessary, such as those that have given their stamp to the history of modern Europe. But not by those cases should the historical and the immediate value of religion be judged, where it has reached a dead end, where in myth and in cult one saw not only the form, but also the content, but rather by those more natural cases, where myth has only a determining influence on the form of worship, where it is only a surrogate for the masses for a more mature worldview of the learned, but where this myth does not also simultaneously represent the worldview of the leading minds themselves and thus must become a fetter for them.
Religion means more than anthropomorphic belief in God; it means spiritual culture. Religion was always the philosophy of the people; it brought the connecting idea into the disordered heap of facts; it held the masses firm at the spiritual height once achieved. The obligations imposed on the individual under the sanction of religion were always a real compass for him for regulating the affairs of everyday life in a manner consistent with reason and culture. We owe our custom, our public conscience, our altruism to religion. By raising the
