And even if the succession of the many philosophical systems had no other effect than their mutual overcoming and the return of the worldview to sound materialistic foundations, which for other peoples, who as a consequence unfortunately lacked this struggle for principles, were a given from the outset, the methodology that became necessary for the struggle nevertheless had the systematic development of the abstract sciences and, in part, their emergence as a fruitful consequence.
The systematic development of many scientific disciplines was therefore exclusively a consequence of the peculiar developmental paths of the culture of the peoples concerned, but by no means the result of specific racial talents.
That philosophy and science were therefore developed so exactly precisely in Greece, and that philosophy and science were only developed again so exactly, i.e., systematically, in modern times, has its reason in the truth of the sentence: Out of the thesis, the synthesis only grows through the opposition of the antithesis. Where for the deeper minds there was only a philosophy like the theogony of Homer and Hesiod, or that of irrational patristics, and not also, as among the oriental peoples, alongside the general worship of idols, a more substantial metaphysical esoteric system; where, for progress in every single subordinate area of detail, it was first necessary to clear away an enormous quantity of the most absurd prejudices, which elsewhere had never hindered material and spiritual evolution at all; where, through the transformation of works that represent the highest achievement of poetic intuition of the human genius, where through their transformation into a codex of religiously sanctified, unassailable fundamental truths—as happened with the Iliad and Odyssey and later with the Bible—the development of historical knowledge, of geography and astronomy, of physics and anatomy, indeed even of logic, could only penetrate if it could be brought into agreement with the most unnatural fairytale belief: — there

Und wenn auch die Aufeinanderfolge der vielen philo- ſophischen Systeme keinen anderen Effect hatte, als deren gegenseitige Überwindung und die Zurückführung der Welt- anschauung auf gesunde matenalistische Grundlagen, die bei anderen Völkem, bei denen infolgedessen dieser Kampf um die Pnnzipien leider fehlte, von vomherein gegeben waren, ſo hatte doch die für den Kampf notwendig gewordene Methodo- logie die systematische Ausbildung der abstrakten Wissenschaften und teilweise deren Entstehung zur erspneß- lichen Folge. Die systematische Durchbildung vieler wissenschaft- licher Disziplinen ist demnach ausschließlich eine Folge eigen- artiger Entwicklungsgänge der Kultur der betreffenden Völker gewesen, aber keineswegs das Ergebnis spezifischer Rassen- begabungen. Daß also Philoſophie und Wiſſenschaft gerade in Gnechen- land ſo exakt ausgebildet, und daß Philoſophie und Wiſſenschaft erst in der Neuzeit wieder ſo exakt, d. h. systematisch weiter ge- bildet wurden, hat ſeinen Grund in der Wahrheit des Satzes: Aus der Thesis wächst erst durch das Entgegenstellen der Anti- thesis die Synthesis heraus. Wo für die tieferen Geister nur eine Philoſophie wie die Theogeneſe Homers und Hesiods vor- lag, oder die der widervemünftigen Patnstik und nicht auch, wie bei den onentalischen Völkem, neben dem allgemeinen Götzenſdienst noch ein gehaltvolleres metaphyſisches esotensches System; wo es für den Fortschntt auf jedem einzelnen unter- geordneten Detailgebiet erst galt, eine ungeheure Menge der widersinnigsten Vorurteile wegzuräumen, die anderwärts die matenelle und geistige Evolution gar nie gehemmt hatten; wo durch die Umwandlung von Werken, die die höchste Leistung poetischer Intuition des menschlichen Genies darstellen, wo durch deren Umwandlung in einen Kodex religionsgeheiligter, unanlastbarer Grundwahrheiten — wie das mit der Ilias und Odyſſee und später mit der Bibel erfolgte — die Ausgestaltung des histonschen Wiſſens, der Geographie und Astronomie, der Phyſik und der Anatomie, ja ſelbst der Logik nur dann durch- dnngen konnte, wenn ſie mit dem widematürlichsten Märchen- glauben in Übereinstimmung gebracht werden konnte: — d a
