382 Concerning the historical role that in this regard fell specifically to the Jewish race, we need not waste any words.
Where only the form is passed on, the symbol is eventually taken for the essence, and all research and all development find in the rigid authority of irrational myths, which had value only as popular symbols, an impediment that can lead to the destruction of free thought and free research, and as a rule always has led to it. But where the myth, as in pure monotheism, has reached a height at which it no longer contains anything irrational; even more so where religion is at most exoterically, but not also esoterically, authoritatively binding: — there, scientific and social life is not only not inhibited by religion, but is actually liberated.
The priests of the Orient were in fact not merely church officials—as today, but also as already in ancient Rome and Hellas—but rather researchers and scholars in all fields of knowledge. All intellectual professions were tied to the priesthood. It not only had its special religious functions, but it was also the bearer of science, of medicine, of legal and historical traditions, and in profound metaphysical speculations it created abstruse religious systems, to which it made itself a servant.
Renan's assertion that the Semites never included in their scientific endeavors the quest for the ultimate reasons of being is surely incorrect. If we ask, however, who has dealt with these metaphysical questions about the ultimate causes and the purpose of being—which are as unsolvable today in our scientific age as ever— more closely, i.e., methodologically, text-book like, systematizingly, then we find, apart from the old theosophies, as the methodological processors of these themes, to be sure, only the Greeks and the philosophers from the age of the overcoming of scholasticism.
In both cases, however, the cause for this was the unsatisfactory nature of the respective existing worldvie-
