381 origin and purpose, is identical with 'science'. But it can have been common knowledge of the people just as little as our science is today. The doctrine was popularized for the people through mythology, but the priestly doctrine was passed on as a secret discipline, as a mystery.
"We can conclude from the nature of the oriental doctrine that the mysteries are concerned with three things:
-
The observation and understanding of nature, aiming at the recognition that the phenomena of the starry heavens and of natural life are a revelation of a unified divine power.
-
The introduction to the experience that in the cycle of life, death comes from life and life comes from death—the secret of immortality.
-
The secret of communion with the deity." (Jeremias).
These ideas returned in all possible later cultural phases again and again, as a doctrine of redemption, as a doctrine of immortality, in the form of all possible philosophical systems, which were considered original because their model was not known. And just as in these later doctrines only the outer form was always preserved, while their content transformed into some folk or religious superstition, so too among the ancient Mesopotamians in their later period, the conceptual content of their system had evaporated, and all that remained was their complicated mythology, which then migrated as "polytheism" to Phoenicia, to Greece, and to Rome. Mythology, which is always the exoteric expression of an abstract system, personifies concepts in the form of gods, replaces them with images and symbols; and thus every religious doctrine, through the popularization and substantiation of the abstract doctrine, must become an open or disguised polytheism; — and the reaction against this reaction leads again and again to religious reformations, which creatively restore the original conceptual content partially or completely, or — develop it further.
